Got a question, there is a cable/wire that runs from the outside AC unit and in tracing it the best we can seems to run into the furnace. Any idea what this might be.
Reason for asking what it might be is our puppy chewed part of the way through it. He actually went throught one of the wires inside the cable(white one), and managed to chew the insulation off most of the others.
Every thing was still running okay. Although we have since turned the ac off and wrapped a plastic bag aorund the exposed wires until we can fix it tomorrow evening
We figure if we just got out the damaged section and then rewire it going by the color coding of the wires inside the cable all should be fine
its 2-wire for your a/c,that wire goes to your furnace and it 24 volts, your a/c isnt going to work without it!Kill the power too your furnace before u fix it!
We'll make sure we cut the power to both when we get to it tomorrow evening. Thanks for that as never thought about the furnace power
Even though he chewed the cable up pretty good it was still running normally. We only turned it off, about an hour later, after we took a better look and realized he broke through one of the wires and tore through the insulation most of the others. Wind started to pick up and we didn't want to risk the cable moving around and the bare wires touching each other
Outside a/c unit will have two sets of wires going to it. The 10 or 12 gauge with ground supply 220vac to the motors. THe smaller 18 or 20 gauge are 24vac wires from the thermostat telling it when to run. The 24vac is supplied from a transformer usually found on or near the furnace.
My roomate got a friend of his to come over and fix it this evening, the guy does commercial AC/Heating so i'm feel good about the job. He ended up running a new wire . Don't know what gauge but definatly thicker than what was on there.
All is now well, just need to put up some kind of barrier to keep the dog from getting at it again.
