For the best omni-directional ground-plane, just mount your K40 in the rear-center of the cab... The mass of the cab/engine will cause a very slight forward reflectivity, but nothing too radical.

Oz,

I just have to fugure out how to do it without drilling a hole in the cab. I guess I am kind of a frweak like that..not too big on drilling holes. Thats why I was hoping somone had something that I could put in the steak pocket. Maybe I will have to fabricate a bracket and mount it to the box somehow. I dont mind a few holes in there as I could have LineX touch it up.

So your K40 is not a magnetic mount... Buy one! The magnetic base loaded K40 will out do a K40 wound stick on trim, tune and performance plus it's a heck of a lot more forgiving in low clearance situations... That little stainless whip gives a lot, but the magnetic base holds strong. You can snake the coax thought a hole (may already be a plugged one there) under the rear window behind the seat, and then run the coax behind the bezel up to the top, exiting near the 3rd brake light... Simple and clean.

OZ,

I have a magnet mount, I thought that you meant to buy a roof mount and rill a hole. I will have to find a hole in the back or notch the 3rd. brake light assembly and use some silicone to seal it. I sent the Sirius antenna through the brake light and made a small notch. I have a power sliding window in the back so I am not sure that there is a hole or not. Plus that may give me an excuse to upgrade to a LED 3rd brake light.

OZ do you know where I could get the cap for the K40 base when the whip is off?

There are a lot of online choices... The part is about $5.00, so shipping may be the cost issue. $5 part $10 shipping...

Hey OZ,

One last question on this and I will leave you alone. right now I have figured out that if I remove the steak pocket cover I can mount the K-40 in there with the trunk mount. Do you think that this will cause too much stress on the pocket and peel it up? Also its nice and tight cuase its pinched between the steak pocket and the tonneau cover frame so no one can steal it.

I will wait to hear from you before I run the coax to the new console. Not that I didnt want to run the Mag Mount as you suggested I was just looking for a cleaner mount that was easier to get into the cab.

If you dont think it will work I will use the magnet mount and notch the thrid brake light.

Thanks for the help and Suggestions

If you're getting a good bite on the metal, but not so much on the plastic cap of the bed-rail, it should be OK... The whip itself takes most of the beating from wind and trees, so the base ought to be fine there (on metal).

I got a good bite on the metal, the plastic is nice so the base doesnt rub on the metal. The two set screws coem up from the bottom. I will try and post some pics of the truck and the way I mounted the antenna today...if I can figure it out.

Thanks for the Help and advice,

Figure out what? How to post the pictures? It's a little bit of technique, but relatively easy compared to installing the antenna.

There's a guy who is a member of Niskayuna Fire #2 who is/was heavy into this stuff. Last I knew he was also a county fire coordinator. I think his name is Don Miller. I also want to say he runs or at least ran a store in Sch'dy. Also who does your department radios? I'd be willing to bet that they might be able to help you out with some things if you need it.

He closed up shop and moved to the great state of Florida. I have talked to a few of the local radio people here but they have nothing. They deal mainly with 2 way fire/police/ems radios so there answer is drill a hole in the center of the roof and mount it. I have the antenna where I want it now.

Yes it is an art to post pics. I am a computer retard so its more like greek to me. I figure it out. I hope to finish the install tomarrow and get it all cleaned up so I will get some pics in.

That sucks. Like I said, it's been a few years since I've seen him. He was always easy to spot on the road. Just look for the truck that had more antennas on the roof than hairs on his head.

Check out how I mounted my 5 foot firestik antenna. I used a Firestik Stake hole mount, and covered it up with the plastic stake hold cover that comes stock on superduties. I just drilled a little hole in the plastic cover and slipped it over my antenna. The firestik stake hole mount is really well made stainless steel and mounts flush enough that you can still cover it up with the little plastic cover.
Check oout my google gallery:

Heres a couple quick snapshots:

and HEres what the mount looks like under the cover:

I get a very low SWR (about a 1.3) due to the firestik being top loaded, and it seems to propogate really well. Im very happy with this mount

Thanks! Heres some more info on the mount i used:
STAKE HOLE POCKET MOUNT

And here is the antenna I have:
Firestik II "FS Series" CB Antennas

I have the 5 foot version. I like Firestik cause they are top loaded, which puts your load above the roof line and helps with keeping SWR down, and maximizing signal output.
