I read that Ford has send a letter to Powerstroke owners regarding a recall of the CPS.
I am living in Brazil and obviously did not get a letter from FORD USA.
3 months ago I bought a 1997 (altough manufactured 1996)F250 7.3 Powerstroke from american travellers.
VIN is : 1FTHX26F2VEA27152
The 7.3 is not known in Brazil.
A recall of a part after 10+ years? The part can´t be that bad if it lasted for so long?
What is the reason for the recall?
How do I know if I need a new one.
I get the impression reading some posts that the new one causes problems. So before I order a new one in the States, do I run the risk of getting a CPS which is worse than the one I have?
Cheers,
Marcel
I doubt your truck is covered under the recall, too old. They are known to go bad without warning and leave you stranded.....I'll bet yours is not original. They are cheap now ($15-20), used to be over $100. Buy 2 and keep them with the truck.
Gray is the supposedly redesigned recall CPS. Blue is for a DT466E. It has a stronger magnet and there are rumors it slightly changes the timing. I don't think there's any reason to run a blue one though. An IH truck I work on at work is on its third that I know of, so I doubt they're any more reliable.
Am currently diagnosing a no start condition on a '97 7.3 turbo diesel. Am wondering whether a bad cps would bring up a code?
yes but not always will it code. Does the tach move while cranking? if yes then the CPS is fine. If it does register RPM then either CPS, wiring or PCM issue. Do you get a Wait to Start light one with the key? If not then check fuse number 22 in the engine compartment many time the fuel heater will short out and blow that fuse. If its blown unhook the fuel heater, replace the fuse and fire it up.
I would unhook the heater even though the fuse didn't blow again. Its only a matter of time before it happens again. And in Brazil you have no need for the fuel heater.
The only difference i have found with the sensors is
The grey sensor has a narrower pick up for the trigger.
Air gap, magnetic force is the same.
Some have problems failing a cont test (#8 inj) with the new grey sensor.
Cannot say if its from the narrow pickup or its a sheilding issue.
But it is a problem.
Black = 1.134L X .8195W
Grey = 1.134L X .5835W
#/s are in inches.

you´d be surprised though. 300 km inland from where I live it has snowed 2 weeks ago! Global warming??
But we use the car for travelling through e.g. South America and at 15000 ft it gets pretty cold at night too! (thats when I found out the about the fuse#22 problem....Got around it with warming up some fuel and putting that in the filterbowl, not knowing about the simple unplugging trick...
