exaust question

exaust question

the other day me and my dad pulled his race car to the track and when we left my truck running and we was fueling his race car up and i walked beside my truck and noticed the exaust blowing on my leg and so i felt with my had and it was pretty hot so i think i might need new exaust or some thing do yall have any ideas on how big i need to go?

Are you saying you need new exhaust because it was leaking, or because it was hot? Without a turbo, 3" to 3 1/2" is adequate.

it has a lot of back pressure and it pretty hot at the tip and i have no turbo

I got mine so hot once that the plastic mudflap got a curve formed into it... The tmep isn't as indicative as how the engine behaves. At idle, it shouldn't be overly hot, but there will be heat all the same.

it hot enough that you dont want to hold your hand in front of it very long, i guess i need to get a pyrometer that will probly tell me more about it

That will tell the whole story. Typically, the exhaust will be hot enough to be uncomfortable for sure.

If you were just working the engine, exhaust temps close to 1000 degrees are not out of line.

After working the engine hard, you should always let it idle a couple minutes to cool off.

I don't shut mine off till the EGT is under 300 degrees, sometimes that takes two or three minutes at idle.

There are a couple sponsors that sell pyrometers.

About 150 is the going rate for both the gauge and thermocouple.
