292 Y Block Fuel Pump

Hello all.
Just finished putting a 292 Y block in my 63 F100. Engine is rebuilt with a 57 4bbl manifold, edelbrock 600cfm carb, Reds Headers, and a Jegs universal dual exhaust with thrush mufflers. Exhaust is not yet finished. Cranked the engine for the first time and gas would not flow. Hooked a electric fuel pump up for a second to pull gas through. This worked. The original fuel pump was leaking pretty badly. Fuel pump is a 2 bolt type with a glass bowl. Took it apart and there is a gasket in the middle that is held in with one screw and has several holes around the center mount screw. Made a new gasket and the thing is not leaking now. My question is what fuel pump will replace this one ? As usual the parts places list ones for SB Ford 289,302,351 and nothing for 239,272,292 Y-Block. Will the SB ford replacement pumps fit ? If not any idea what will and where to get it ?

Thanks for the help.

292 Y Block Fuel Pump

The small block will bolt up,
but the 292's has a little more
bend in thhe pump arm, and the
SBF pump will fail in short order.

292 Y Block Fuel Pump

Thank you. That is good to know. Any idea where I can get another fuel pump ? The 292 engine has a 4bbl. Trucks 292 engines did not come with a 4bbl. The fuel pump has a glass bowl on the bottom that is held on with a wire bracket with finger screw type fastener. Mac's and such show a smaller fuel pump with a metal canister on the bottom. This type of pump would most likely fit the 292 block but I am concerned it would not be adequate for a 4bbl. I am not sure of the exact year of this engine or what vehicle it came from. My guess would be that it came from a car. Fuel pump is on the drivers side front of engine. Water pump outlet is in the same place. Truck bottonm radiator hose is on passengers side. Had to invent a hose for that using 2 large hoses and a exhaust coupling.

Again thanks for the help

292 Y Block Fuel Pump

Hi.
The headers I got were the pickup stubbies. They clear everything. I still have stock steering and the three speed clutch linkage. The drivers side header bolted right up to the engine no problem. The passenger side header did not. The 7 holes the bolts go through on the header to the engine were not lined up correctly on the header. They should be centered and directly in line with each other horizontally. They were not. I had to drill the holes out to 1/2 inch and then play the old use the drill bit side ways/ up and down to make the outer most holes line up. I payed allot for these headers and waited for them to be shipped from CA to MD. I wrote Reds Headers a letter about this and to date I have received no reply. There advertising makes it sound like they are a small shop and pay attention to detail. This was not my experience.

Thanks for the help.

The Truck 292 did have a 4bbl, but was
used in the larger trucks, like F600's...
NAPA should be able to find you one, I
got one from a small, private parts house,
so you should be able to find one at one
of the auto disaster stores...

Use a fuel pump from a FE series engine (352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428). Probably others (332) will work too. I have spoken with several people who have done this and they report excellent results. I have not tried this and was able to purchase a rebuilt pump for a Y-block with the metal cannister filter which worked fine. I bought mine from a local independent parts house. Most of them purchase from large warehouses and you shouldn't have trouble getting one I wouldn't think.

Thanks Guys for the help.
This is the best place I have found to get info on these trucks. So tired of hearing from the kids at the parts counters " My computer only goes back to 1968 Sir" AutoZone in my area listed the canisiter type fuel pump for 24.99 and shows it as in stock. Will stop by and pick it up. Mac's lists the same pump for 29.95 plus shipping.

Thank you

Thanks for the information on the headders.I realy want headers and it seems they seem to be the only ones who make them so if I have to drill them I guess that's better than not having at all.I also live in MD try Westminster auto parts in westminster. They should have your fuel pump in stock.I gess that's depending were you live in MD.

I have two of the glass bowl carburetors for my 64 292, they both need rebuilding, some day I want to install one because they just look cool, I bought one through Mac's, it's a metal canister type and it works swell, no problems whatsoever.

A stock fuel pump will provide more than adequate fuel flow for all but the largest engines, don't worry about that -- people tend to go in overkill mode when it comes to that.

I replaced my fuel pump with a rebuilt from Napa Auto Parts co. There are two problems to be aware of. The first is, be certain that the new pump's rocker arm is identical in angle and length to the original so your cam shaft is not damaged. The second is to check if the inlet and outlet openings are reversed. It took me a while to realize why no gas was getting into the carb and why there was a swooshing sound in the gas tank.

I got a canister type fuel pump from AutoZone. They had it in the store. It works well. I had the same problem when I installed the new fuel pump fitting are reversed. Gas tank was gurgeling while trying to start the truck. Switched them and have had no problem. Have tried NAPA several times and strike out every time. The last time I left I told them they need to take the "Hard to find parts" sigh off the door.

Thank you all for all the help. Finally got the truck running and could not have done it without all the help.

Reds makes headers and Sanderson makes headers.
Red's wrote me back and said that they most likely had welded the plate on upside down. Paid just short of 300 dollars for these headers. Would expect better quality. They do work. Looking into getting sometype of heat shielding for them. Do not want to cook my starter etc.

Hi.
Try www.sandersonheaders.com
I put Reds mismatched headers hooked to a 2 1/4 exhaust kit from JC. Whitney (79.00 kit) hooked up to Flowmaster deltaflow series 40 mufflers. Exits before the rear wheels. Had to get a few odds and ends at the local parts places as well like exhaust turn down tips. Sounds very throaty with a little crackle at low deceleration. If I set the engine idle to 600 RPM as recommended it sounds like a big Harley. Is quieter at 1000 RPM idle and at any moving speed. Sounds really nice.
