It's significantly louder than a completely stock truck. However it is a very pleasing tone to my ear, at least. Sometimes driving around town i wish my TN was louder in the cab, but that's good for long drives. A stock H2E is also VERY quiet, almost stock-like with an ATS, or maybe not that much. The Garrett really screams. If i get the chance this weekend at Spring Fling i'll shoot some videos.
The Garrett GTP38R really screams compared to stock. Some folks love the sound , others don't. When we were at the dyno last year in OKC and Brian ran his truck with the Garrett GTP38R we all just about had to hold our hands over our ears, but that was at WOT.
So if it were you which one would you get? Ive been reading about all kinds of stuff. And I just dont wanna make a mistake spending this much money.
It's up to you. There are a lot of people who are very happy with the Garrett, and others happy with the TN. Each have had their share of issues, but it's a relatively small number.
GTP38R's can surge under certain conditions. Mine has never surged, but I have been in another truck with this turbo and it surged easily. To prevent mine from surging, I ordered my turbo from Dieselsite and had Bob port the compressor housing before shipping out. He claims this helps reduce or eliminate surge issues, and I believe him. Mine has never once tried to surge. The truck that I did ride in that had surge issues also had Mini-Me's (my truck is running stock injectors), so I think that truck had an easier time pushing the MAP into the surge range. His also didn't have the ported compressor housing, and I'm betting that would have made a difference too.
The TN BB turbos had a bumpy intro with quality control issues. Several were shipped out with missing pieces in the center section, causing the turbo to fail within only a few miles after installing. That has since been corrected, but the TN is still fairly new, so it hasn't been tested as much as the GTP38R has.
Like I said, the problems encountered with each turbo have been relatively small, and just about anyone who runs either turbo has been very satisfied. Take your pick.
I keep hearing people sat WW/ATS housing and I was under the impression that these 2 weren't supposed to be used together, is that the wrong impression?
If you get the ATS housing you do not need the WW. The WW is economical route to reducing surge. It won't hurt anything to use both, except your ears and some top end.
Here is a map for the TN Ballbuster unit which is a non BB unit, but ought to have very similar characteristics as I don't believe there is a difference in the wheels. I have not plotted anything on this but you could easily figure where they go using the data from the other two.
