I had a friend file a labor lien to get the title for my truck. It's been 4 months, the lady says there is a problem with the VIN#. The only #'s on my truck are on the tag on the firewall. That are stamped on the top of the tag.? is is that the VIN# for the truck? There are no #'s on the frame. I looked before and after I wire brushed all the paint and rust off. And painted it. Can I take the tag off the firewall and take it to her so she call see that the #'s are there or is it against the law to remove it. I heard it was. But wondered how people put new firewall in if they don't remove the tag. Thanks
I was told by a lawyer that where I live, Wisconsin, if in any way the VIN tag is removed or altered in any way the police can impound your vehicle on the spot. I doubt if any cop would do that, I think it's just a tool for them to nab suspected car and motorcycle thieves. I don't know about the laws in any other state.
Claude, I would really be surprised that there is no frame number. It should be on the passenger side forward of the brake hose bracket. Has the frame been altered in that location ? The numbers stamped in the cab proper (not the tag) are NOT the VIN.
How about taking a picture of the tag and taking it to the dmv.
On another antique vehicle I had the vin questioned by the dmv. I had the local cop come to my house and verify the number. That satisfied the dmv.
OK I went out and took a grinder and took the paint off and GUESS WHAT I found the following #'s 97HC268921 BUT they don't match the #'s on the tag on the firewall so do I go by the #'s on the frame? Thanks I knew I could count on y'all
The problem with the VIN might be that it doesn't have enough numbers. I've run into problems with both the local DMV and my insurance company. They both expect the VIN # to have 17 digits.
Talk to the DMV people and see if thats the case, I know my insurance lady had to add zeros in front of my VIN to make the system recognize it.
FWIW, I found my frame vin and my glove box vin to be two different numbers. But I knew the PO had two trucks mixed together;. I plan on using the frame vin. If it comes back as a problem, then I will resubmit with the box vin. I'll be doin that fairly soon.

go by the frame VIN and get a new VIN plate for the cab, and rivet it on.
the paper and the chassis and the cab will match
I welded my glovebox closed, so I have to put the vin plate somewhere else. but I want a clean pretty one to go with the rest of the paint work.
and you can do a pencil rubbing of the plate if need be.. in Texas they have an offical form the vin plate rubbing. I took it in both times, but they didn't need to look at it.
I had 2 trucks and the state of Iowa screwed the title up. They added an extra letter to the Vin #
The state of Iowa told me to bring it in for an inspection. IM in Ohio!
Ohio has to do a number inspection and varify its correct, no good.
I had a junker with a clear Ohio title. You see where this goes
