Nope, I actually just upsized from a Mustang GT to a 7 passenger SUV with a Hemi
Gas may be expensive, but I prefer to ride in comfort and safety. I'll just stop getting my Starbucks every day if I need to tighten up around the belt with money.
This whole fuel cost thing is the only reason why I haven't replaced my old faithful and reliable '88. I drive my Taurus every day and my truck on sunday's or as needed. I can't justify getting a new rig and making a gynormus payment just to have it sit 6 days a week. My wife drives t he Expy maybe 10 miles per day and we take it on trips so it's not killing me to have it.
I'm not willing to change sizes of trucks or even get a new one until the worlds fuel suppliers get thier minds right.
I recently upsized to an '04 SCrew FX4 from a '97 V6 reg cab after the '97 was totaled 3 weeks ago. I got about 24mpg (highway- no load) with the '97 v6.
At about $75 for 3/4 of a tank (I have a pet peeve about letting the needle sit on empty) I'm scared to see what my mileage is now with the 5.4L
nope, Durango. Ford and Chevy were asking ridiculous prices, and then I found a fully loaded Durango w/ AWD, 41,000 miles and Hemi for $20k...the best I could with Chevy/Ford was low $30's for 06+ models

I had a 98 Single Cab, 4.2 v-6, 8 ft bed with 5 speed...the best mileage I ever got was 16 mpg...and I lived 20 miles outside of town. That POS saw at least 40 miles a day of ~60-65 mph...what were you doing to get 24 mpg? I typically got 14-15 mpg
I haven't driven my '07 in about 2 months, not at $80+/tank. And I have been averaging 18 MPG with it. OUr '00 Ranger doesn't do much better, maybe 22 driven with caution, so it sits, too. For daily commuting, our '88 BMW 535i gets 28.6 mixed driving, 30+ if only highway at reasonable speeds, high 20's if I can keep it under 80. I'm just too cheap to give more of my money to the oil co's.
we are goin today to maybe do a trade in on a 08 vw bug
but i aint tradin the f150 (my truck) my wife is lookin at the bug
and if she likes it the hummer will be gone

I work at oil rigs all over texas so I dont really commute. My driving is all open highway with just a minimal load typically 120 miles or more. I had the smaller bed (6ft?) with the 5 speed manual. The only mods I did was a K&N CAI and bosch 4+ plugs. Around town on short trips I got 15-16 if thats any condolence.
I have been driving diesel F-250's since about 1999 - a new one every year. I have even mixed in a couple F-150's, too. I drive about 50,000 a year. I didn't need a diesel, but the resale beat the snot off any gas rig around - including cars. I have been trading yearly since 2000 for anywhere between $4,300 to $5,500, depending on option changes. With that said, I never put brakes, shocks, tires, mufflers, transmission services, coolant changes, or anything except oil changes and fuel... jut handed in the keys and got a new rig.
I commute about 600 miles a week to work, and another 300-400 a week to and from jobs. With the cost of diesel now, and the new trucks getting really poor mileage, I ordered a new 2008 F-150. I need a truck, period. I am just gambling that it will do me okay towing my 28 foot travel trailer (maximum 6,000#). The way I look at it, for the few thousand miles I tow a year, I don't need a diesel, although I am the biggest diesel head around. I'll miss my 2007 F-250 Crewcab, but the intake, exhaust, and tunes are on the way and I haven't even picked up my new F-150 yet. If the F-150 won't cut it, I'll jsut have to be the first in line for the 4.4L diesel in the F-150. I'm sure it won't command the $6,000 price adder some of you have been spouting in the other thread. Let's face it, the cost between comparably equipped F-150's and F-250's aren't that far apart already. Who'd buy a diesel F-150 when you can do o much more with an F-250 for about $3,500 more. The diesel option in the 2010 F-150 will most likely carry a less than $2k cost just to be desirable, let alone cost effective.

You global warmer, you!
I'm thinking it's time to buy a slightly used V10 from all the people crying about gas prices... I told myself I'd wait till it hits $4 and panic is at it's peak.

yep, it's gas, it's expensive...and I'd rather drive a big vehicle than a little rattletrap.

I hope you're right. The new 6.2 gas motor is supposed to be out by 2011 in a 4x4 version of the Lightning. So it's going to be hard to pick between a 6.2 gasser or 4.4 diesel.
oh well, I love buying new trucks. I'll probably have to flip a coin

Thats nuts lol! I've never heard anyone getting mpg like that and we have almost identical trucks. Mine is a '99 4.2L regular cab short box, 5 speed, and even an open diff with the hwy gears (but 265x75's). Best I usually get on highway is mid 16's. Heck the sticker on the window only had it rated at 15city/18hwy and we all know the ratings are usually higher than you usually get (or at least they used to be). I think my record was in the 17's. My highway milleage is based on ~10 hr highway trips at about 70mph with 1 stop for gas and 1 stop for food (I commute between ohio and upstate NY frequently). Of course my daily driver mpg is less, about 14.5 usually mixed cty/hwy lately.

Most folks seem to get as good or better mpg with the 5.4L than I do with my 4.2L
On fueleconomy.gov the 08 150 4x4 get the same mpg regardless of motor. Just as well get the 5.4L. For the 4x2 with automatic the spread is ony 1mpg city/2hwy... the 4.2L is rated 14/19 and 5.4L is rated 13/17. Unless you put on about 1,000 miles a week I still see no reason not to get the 5.4L... the 5.4L will probably hold up better in the long run if you actually do put 1,000 mi per week on it too lol!
If I got 24mpg in a p/u truck I'd have hung onto that until the wheels fell off.
