Hey all, i do some offroading with my 01 f150 4x4 and it has the stock 17 inch rims. Since these are a less common size when it comes to offroading, i was wondering if downsizing rim sizes would have any negative effects. I would only go to 16" or 15" if i could find some with the same lug pattern. Ive heard of it being bad as far as the front disks. Any inputs? Thanks.
try to keep the OD of the tire the same if you want the speedo to work right. lets say you have 265 x 70 x17 now... if you go to 16 inch rims and dont want to go wider than 265, you might try to find 75 series tires instead of 70. ----the older 3/4 tons had 235 x 80 x 16 which are tall and narrow--- that might work.
My truck came with 265/75-17 (I think) on 17" wheels. The tires were later changed to a 33x12.50-17 and the torsion bars cranked a bit in the front. I ended up going to a 16x10 rim and a 305/70-16 tire and it fits fine. The tires stick out just hair, and the rims are just big enough to clear the brake calipers.
These tires are 305/70-16 and are equivalent to a 33x12.50-16. This is the closest pic I have of a profile. If you need a better one, let me know and I'll snap one tomorrow...
