Another thing to think about. If this is a stock starter you most likely bought a rebuilt unit, I don't know anyone building brand new, stock starters. There are new starters, as mentioned above but they aren't "Stock". If you did get a stock rebuilt starter the rebuilder might not have replaces the bushings in the end plates of the starter. Maybe they looked good. Anyways, what happens if the bushings are slightly worn there will be some place in the armature. When the starter is cold the armature has some clearance from the fields but when it gets hot, from cranking or just from the radiant heat of the engine, the armature will expand and come in contact with the fields causing them to ground out to varing degrees. They may be just touching but that's enough to make the starter spin slower. When the starter cools the armature contracts. Make sure the starter is tested when it warm, like when it's next to the engine.
