292 or 312?

Hey everybody...me and my dad were out hunting one day and we came upon a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 4-door hardtop. This car is STRAIGHT!! NO dents. NO Rust. And the only thing messed up on it is that the rear window is busted out on it. The interior is pretty beat up too. The odometer reads 56,000 miles. We opened the hood and found a V-8. It said V-8 Thunderbird. It has a cast iron 4 barrel intake with 4 barrel carb. We asked around and some guys think this could be a very rare find of a car with a 312 in it. But how can u tell a 292 from a 312?? And what kind of horsepower and compression are these motors running?? I know that this is a ford truck site.... but i had no where else to ask about this motor in this car. If you have any input or comments please let me know! thanks alot!!

292 or 312?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Oct-02 AT 07:18 PM (EST)]You might try surfing over to ford-y-block.com, John Mummert's web site. He's got a lot of technical info. Trying to determine from the engine casting number can be equivocal; they used the same casting number for both 292 and 312 engines.

Are the valve covers cast aluminum or stamped steel with a T Bird decal? The T Bird engine in 57' was a 312. It was used in several Ford cars as an optional V8. Sounds like a great find.

292 or 312?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Oct-02 AT 11:21 PM (EST)]1957 312 4bbl had 245 hp. That does have the Autolite carb doesn't it? The manifold is the preferred ECZ-B that fits a more modern Holley 4bbl. The rockers are the preferred higher ratio; 1.54:1. The heads are the preferred ECZ-G with small chambers and large valves. Nice engine.

Edit: Also, the cam has nice lift and duration numbers.

292 or 312?

My first time in this forum...so excuse me if I bungle. I have a '48 F-1 with a Y-block in it that I want to replace with a 5.0. where is the stamp on the engine casting so I can tell if what I have is 292 or 312? Mine runs but was badly wired and said wiring fried. I am tired of trying to get parts and want to upgrade. Any idea? MagPie1

Above the oil filter ( the casting numbers will be upside down) or on the passenger side of the block near the front, up near the cylinder head surface. You're looking for [b]ECZ 6015 C[/b[ or EDB 6015 (A?).

I owned a 57 Ford Fairlane 500. My brother bought it new, so I know the engine was factory stock. The car had the 312 ci, 245 hp engine. The valve cover decal said "Thunderbird Special V8". I believe the carb was a Holley, but not sure. The car was a stick on the column, and was very quick! good luck.
