8.8 rear info needed

8.8 rear info needed

Is there a way to tell if a 8.8 rear end has 28 or 31 splines from the info on the tag. I'm looking to go to the pull a part and don't want to waste a lot of time pulling shafts out to see the spline count. Wanting to get a limited slip member to upgrade the rear end.

The truck is a 1992 F150, but won't any 8.8 in a ford truck work as long as the splines are the same?

AFAIK, all of the trucks got 31 splines. I've never seen or heard of one with 28 splines. As long as the carrier and axles match you should be good to go.

Wasn't sure if it was like the 9" fords that had both. Thanks for the info. One less thing to worry about.

I'll add that all 87-96 F150's got 31 spline 8.8 axles, but rangers, explorers and mustangs were known to have 28 spline axles in some years so you're not guaranteed to get the right part from those vehicles. These axle assembly from these smaller vehicles were narrower as well, and the cars has multi-link suspension instead of leaf springs, so they won't swap under an F150.
