It is going to be a pipe thread. Probably 3/8 or 1/2.
If it a SAE thread it will have a o-ring seal. You don't see that much on engines because most sensors or switches are a pipe thread. Rarely will you see that, basically, because of the added machine work on the engine casting to be able to use an SAE or Metric thread plug or sensor.

In the US 1/4" NPT specifies diameter, pitch, and taper (0.540", 18, 0.05556). There's no ambiguity and it is a standard. The entire world may not use it, but it's still a standard.

Probably the most amusing thing I saw there was a couple of young guys laying carpet. They had a tape measure marked in both inches and meters, and were calling out measurements in inches. When I ribbed them about it, they got nervous and started calling out metric.
