1988 EFI 5.8 liter performance problems

Rebuild engine has 20K miles. Started noticing accerlation problem at high speed (55-70 mph) when going up hill, passing cars, etc. Had fuel system cleaned and engine tuned up with no great improvement. Tune-up shop suggested compression check, all cyclinders running between 125-140 psi. Now engine is starting to ping and wants to make a funny back-fire type of noise when accerlating from a stop. Plug wires are new and have been verified going to correct plugs. I have a code scanner but computer reports no error codes. How does a person check the fuel injectors?? Somewhere on this bulletin board I read something about a propane vaccum leak check on the intake manifold. How is this done?? Does anybody have any suggestions or might have come accross the same problem. I hate to take the truck to a dealer and get surprised with a $800-$1000 bill if I can do the job myself.

Sounds like it could be a timing problem. Check the timing, check the vacuum advance, and it even could be the timing chain getting worn and sloppy; but check your timing first.
