I used to jump in, (when its warm), and crank it over without glow plugs.
Now, i have to wait for glow plugs, and it seems to crank a little longer to start. Don't get me wrong, truck runs perfect, just this starting issue makes me nervous.
Anyone else have a similar issue?
PS, this is not another problem like temperature, or compression, it starts worse now at warmer temps than before at colder temps.
Drive it for a bit and see if the check engine light eventually comes on. In a few cases, the new grey CPS can cause contribution faults. It will show up after several drive cycles.
I still got my old spare, and I'm having contribution problems as well- before I might of had one cylinder out a tiny bit, more than likely due to clogged injectors. NOW, I have 1,3,5, and 8 all doing whatever the hell they want. I'm gonna find time to swap it out and see then how it runs.
Has anyone taken them back to the dealer for this, and if so, what became of it?

I'm not having trouble with mine pesonally but have heard about problems with new cps recall part and many dealers are clueless once again, they just start diagnosing and throwing parts at it hoping to solve the problem. Meanwhile you just fork out the dough. You got the right idea with your old cps. Tell us if that helps.
One of my freinds took his in for the CPS recall. The dealer put the new one in and he didn't even make it off the lot before it went bad. So they put another one in, three days later this one started acting up when the motor heated up he couldn't get it over 1000rpm's. So the dealer put another one in and so far so good.

Ya know, with all thes damn problems coming out of this change, why the hell did Ford re-invnet the wheel here? My old a$$ CPS was working fine!?!?

I just got my recall in the mail the other day (must have taken them a while to track me down). I had just recently been wondering if I should take my truck in for the recall, even though I have a spare CPS in the glove box and haven't had a SINGLE CPS problem since I bought the truck 2 1/2 years ago.
I think i'll be using that recall notice as fire fuel this camping season.

Dealers try to replace injectors, harnesses, IDM's, PCM's, and will even tell owners that their engine is blown and they need a new motor. Seriously, it has happened, and there have been a few posts here and there on forums of that exact same thing. This is all on the owner's dime, since these trucks are out of warranty. Kinda sucks, all that over a $25 part. Go ask your local dealer about it, they have no clue.
My 01 did not start for the first time since I have bought it. I figured that it was the CPS so I took it for the recall replacement. I drove 40 miles to the Dealer that I trust even though I have one just three miles away. It took them a whole eight minutes to get it done. Taking the Fiver out soon, wish me luck. PS. I still will carry the spare.
I have a 1999 7.3 I got in June 1998.It has only 28,000 miles on it but I have had NO trouble with my CPS and will not change it. If it's not broke don't fix it. I carry one in my glove box.
I never got the recall notice, but I took it in and had it done when I had my glow plugs changed. I have a spare in my glovebox also, although at the time I had no idea what it was!! PO left it for me.
