Tachometer

i went to my local salvage yard yesterday and got a tach senor from a 1992 7.3 idi to put in my 1985 6.9, and i hade a printed circut from a F800 that had a tach in it, so i pluged the sensor in and put the dash panel with the tach in and it doesnt work, what could be the problem

perhaps the f800 wasn't made in mexico and doesn't understand what senor tach is telling it?

Do you know that the tach worked in the 800 or that the sensor is any good for sure? Also I am not for sure about the tachs in all the 800's. Did it have a diesel motor in it?

My brother has an mid 80s 800 with a diesel. I am not sure if it runs from a sensor or the alternator.

i did some tests to see if the sensor works and it does, and the tach worked when i removed it, and i tryed wireing it in myself and what ever i do it does work. I think its "perhaps the f800 wasn't made in mexico and doesn't understand what senor tach is telling it?" i guess i'll have to find a truck with a 6.9 with a tach and get the sensor and the dash, or it would look good with an autometer tach but thats $130.00 i dont have

i dont remember about the vehicles equipped with a manual but on the automatic the tach sensor connected directly to the transmission processor it calculated the engine rpm and transduced the signal and relayed it to the tach
i dont believe an aftermarket tach will work either , on a gas engine it uses the ignition signal to derive rpm (4 pulses per crank revolution)
but on the idi it counts every tooth on the ip pump gear
thats why the processor had to transduce the signal

What engine was in the F800?

The tach sender hooks straight to the tach on manual trucks.
But the F 800 did not have a 6.9 or 7.3 in it.

My guess is the signal from the IDI tach sensor is not going to drive the F 800 tach.

An 8.2. That brings back some, hair pulling, days. I don't how the tach hooked up on that motor. It could been on the alt. or the flywheel.

My brothers has a 401 in it. I get a chance I will look at it. I am thinking there is a sensor on the flywheel.

Can you go back and look at the F800?

Try and track down where the sensor is mounted.

You may be able to use it if you can figure out what it is counting to get the RPM.

I haven't seen an 8.2 for so long, I cant remember anything but blue about them.
We had a C 800 on the farm, same motor in it.
That was close to 30 years ago.
