Has anyone installed a roller camshaft in a block that originally came with a flat tappet cam? I would like to install a roller cam in my 89 F150. The engine is a 5.0 liter EFI converted to Mass Air. I am told by some that all blocks after 85 are machined to accept roller cams. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated.

not all blocks after 85 are roller cam. the mustang engines after 85 are all roller cam. the truck blocks went roller cam in 92 i think but dont quote me on that. the 351w went roller cam either just before or just after the lightning came out. i dont think the first lightnings had roller cams. there are a couple companies making retrofit roller can kits for non roller blocks. crane and i think comp is also. just remember to change the distributor gear to bronze. most of thespider pieces are marked up so u cant install them wrong. nothing sounds like a roller cammed small block ford. enjoy.

The kit and the lifters (Ford Racing Parts) were $150 from Ramchargers in Detroit. The Ford Tech Line suggested using a steel dist. gear ($14 from Ramchargers), They said the bronze gears wear out too fast. All parts can be bought from Ford dealers cheaper than Comp Cams ($280) or Lunati ($260).
