To Hyd. roller cam or NOT to Hyd. roller cam
Okay, another question as I'm getting close to doing my 428 short block. I really would like to go with a hydraulic roller camshaft, but those beasts are expensive. And so are the hydraulic roller lifters. Oregon Camshaft grinding has a nice cam for my app, with lift in the area of .531", 112 degree lobe separation, and about 224 degrees of duration.
I would like to rev to about 5800rpm, so should I go with the extra money for the hyd. roller, or stay with the hyd. flat tappet? I will be upgrading to roller rockers and a good double roller chain. Ideas anyone?
Also, Do you know if anyone is making a dedicated hyd. roller lifter for these engines? I know Comp Cams has released a set of retrofit hyd. roller lifters, but they are also meant for the 429/460 engine platform. But, as you all may already know, the 429/460 engines oil the top end through the pushrods like those pesky Chevy engines. So would that really work on an FE? I think that a universal lifter such as the ones Comp cams is selling, would cause oil loss problems if used in an FE. What do you guys think?

Comp has thumpr cams for an FE in both a hydraulic flat tappet and roller setups. If it were me, I would go with a roller if I wanted to go fast. If I'm off roading and/or hauling, a flat tappet is just fine. I straddle the fence when it comes to roller rockers on a flat tappet ($$). On a roller cam, I would certainly use the roller rockers.

Comps so far sells the cams directly off of their website; I havn't yet seen them for sale from Summit or Jegs yet. The offer the hydraulic flat tappet thumpr's for $198.40 and the hydraulic rollers for $340.40. They also offer a part number for a complete "k kit" that has the matching valve springs, timing set, and lifters, but they have yet to list a price for that. Check their website, they have all the specs on the different thumpr cams for an FE.

Thanks for the info Master. I went to Comp Cams' website, but the only rollers I could find for my application were for solid rollers. Can you use a hydraulic roller lifter on a solid cam? Their prices are very reasonable. The lest expensive hydraulic roller cam I have found was in the mid 400's. Bruce

Here, try this link. This should lead you to the hydraulic roller thumpr cams for an FE (or at least the spec page lists it as such, also click on the cam specs link). The bottom three listed for $340.40 are the hydraulic rollers. As far as using hydraulic roller on a solid roller cam, I'm not sure. It seems legit....
