Distilled water will not prevent ionization, only deionized water will and it is not commonly available. Read here about different antifreeze colors:

You may need to boil out your engine block (not sure if this is correct terminology). Also, as horrible as it is to imagine, turning on the heater full tilt, fan on high, open all windows and doors, and hood up will help.

Well, that may be...but tap water does have nasty stuff in it anyhow.

Our work truck at SFA (i think its a 77) was having the same problem...we ran some CLR through the cooling system. After flushing out the CLR (and all the crap it cleaned out) it runs just fine w/no temp rise during extended idle times in our crazy texas heat
