I recently bought an 86' F-350 with the good ol' 6.9 diesel in it. It wasn't running up to par so I replaced the injection pump and injectors. Since then I can't get it to run right, it starts hard, smokes like mad, and rattles. Sounds like its advanced too far, however, when I retard the timing I can't get the truck to run at all. Has anyone ever encountered this problem? If so, how was it corrected?
The pump was just unbolted and removed. My manuel didn't list any timing settings that had to be made before removing it. The drive gear was not removed but the housing was lifted off in order to reseal it, I took special care not to let the gear jump time when I did it. I was going to make sure the gear was in time but the timing marks on the cam gear are not visible with the front cover in place. I didn't know if there was something I did or didn't do when the pump was replaced. Wanted an experianced opinion on the matter.
i would remove the cover and verify the timing marks
it ran bad before and the cover was leaking the previous owner could have the gears out of time
you can see the marks using a very reflective table knife
it is the only thing thin enough to insert in the gap and be able to see the mark
There are no scribe marks on the injection pump because it is a remanufactured unit. I will pull the gear housing, check the timing marks and report back. Thanks a million for the help, its nice the have some experianced opinions on the matter.
You have to pull more than the IP drive gear cover.
You may be able to feel the mark with a pick.
But to see it, fan, alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, vacuum pump, water pump, harmonic balancer, timing gear cover all have to come off.
There should be a line, top center of both the IP neck and the IP drive gear cover where it meets the IP neck.
May have to do a little cleaning, but they are there on all of them.
dave , it can be seen as i described , just did it a couple of years ago when a couple of kids decided to removed the pump with the cover, there is no way i would pull the front of the engine off for this
I rechecked the pump, there is a flat spot on the neck where it looks like the original scribe mark has been ground off. I haven't had a chance to pull the cover and check the timing marks yet. This is my sevice truck and it has been sitting at the jobsite since I changed the pump. I am behind on this job at the moment so it might be a few days before I can get back to it. I'll report back when I can, thanks guys.
