Wife called earlier, she's driving my truck today. Went to pull out and said that my truck sputtered and nearly died. She was stuck out in the middle of the street long enough for cars to pull up and drivers to give her the finger for blocking the roadway. She said the check engine light came on, so I guess I have some investigating to to. Happy happy joy joy.
That seems like as good a place to start as any. Mine didn't turn on the SES either of the times it failed......but that means next to nothing with a cam sensor.
Well she doesn't get home until later tonight, so I won't get to mess with it until tomorrow. At least it set a code. I can just hook up AE and be done with it. If it's a bad CPS, I have 2 spares ready to go. As for oil, I changed that 3 weeks ago, so it's good. I'm sure it's some stupid sensor somewhere, the wife told me it ran fine after that one episode.
The finger in CO!?
That's what my wife said too. She hasn't received the birdy in a long time, so she thought it was funny. LOL
I pulled the codes off my truck. Besides the usual ones I get for my mods, the only one that is different is P1203 (fuel sender circuit short to battery). I also noticed my fuel pressure is odd. It's lower that normal, and it's dropping more than usual. Normally I get a 3-5 psi drop in fuel pressure at WOT on the extreme setting. In the econo setting, it's dropping by 7+. Also it's usually around 70 psi, now it only goes as high as 65.
What do you guys think, dying fuel pump that's shorting itself out internally? Or a bad wire that I need to track down?
Hey Curtis. If you've checked the oil level and you're getting low fuel PSI you need to check the fuel filter if you haven't already. It is kind of a mystery since if you run the truck out of fuel it will sputter and (nearly) die, but the fuel pressure will drop to zero as that happens, not just down a few psi.
Fuel filter and oil was changed 3 weeks ago. I checked the oil level and it's full.
And the slight drop in fuel PSI isn't setting the check engine light. The truck is running fine. The only time the light came on is when it nearly died. Since I wasn't in the truck when it happened, I have no idea what the fuel pressure dropped to at that time. All I know is it set a new code that I've never had before, and right now my fuel pressure is acting funny.
Something is obstructing the fuel pump supply. Volume is down so the pressure drops.
I thought about that, but it's odd that a code would pop up. Normally with any obstruction, pressure drops, but the PCM has no codes for it since there is no sensor that reads fuel pressure. That's why I was thinking this problem is electrical since I did get a code.
Had to make a run down to Monument (round trip about 75 miles). On the drive down the truck ran fine, fuel pressure was back up to normal. Just when I was almost to Monument the truck lost power for a second, then returned full power. I watched the fuel pressure gauge, and it started to drop then rise several times real fast. Then suddenly it went back to normal. Once in town, I pulled up to a stop sign and the fuel pressure dropped to 20 psi while at idle, then went back up again. Then it would drop a few more times here and there, each time down to 20-35 psi, and the truck would run rough. Check engine light came on when the pressure dropped really low and the truck sputtered. After that, it ran fine and fuel pressure went back to normal. Made it back home with zero issues.
So, now the problem has been duplicated. With the way it acted, it seems more and more like an electrical problem. The fuel pressure dropped regardless of throttle position or engine RPM. Fuel pump isn't making any noises either. The pressure drops were instant, and very random. It was like power was cut off from the fuel pump, then suddenly kicked back on. All of this happened in a span of only a few minutes.
do you have the in-tank mods or any type of aftermarket fuel pump? I'm wondering if the electrical problem could be related to it getting ready to die.......if that's possible? I"m not sure if they can develop problems, or just quit completely. Good luck!
if its not the pump, or the filter. try checking the pressure spring and the seat. but it sounds like a pump to me lossing power for what ever reason. tap into the 12v supply for the pump and monitor it as the problem happens. cheap. easy. have you checked the pressure just cycling the key on and off. the pump truns for a few secs. see what the pressure does then.
