93 Ranger bogging down...

93 Ranger bogging down...
The Mrs. has our Ranger in Washington - I'm in Montana. She said the CIL came on the other day. And, now it's starting to "bog down". I've asked her to replace the fuel filter first. Then, if that doesn't help, to replace the O2 sensor.
Any other ideas/suggestions? I hate being away from my vehicle and trying to figure out what's wrong with it.
Also - do the 93's HAVE to be taken into the dealership for code testing? And, I can't remember if it was the Ranger, or not - is there a way to get codes by doing the 'ol "ignition on/off/on/off/etc" trick?
