2002 7.3 ltr

Mother-in-law owns a 2002 F450 7.3 ltr. Configured as a Service Truck standard transmission. Turns over but won't start. I'm not very familiar with the 7.3. Any one have any ideas? Could it be the Crank positioning sensor or the PCM. Does the 7.3 employ the HPOP?

Thanks

When cranking, do you see smoke coming out the tailpipe or not?

No smoke = usually a bad CPS, also sometimes a bad IPR on the back of the HPOP can cause the same issues. The CPS should be checked first, it is under recall from Ford due to the high rate of failures.

Yes smoke = could be a bad glow plug relay. Smoke means everything is firing, but if there isn't enough heat, the engine won't "catch".

One note about the CPS recall. Ford has issued a new and updated CPS that is grey in color and has a part number ending in "B". In a few cases, swapping out from the original "A" black CPS to the grey one can cause cylinder contribution faults. Hardly any dealerships know about this and if the contribution fault pops up, they will try and get you to replace injectors, harnesses, IDM, or even the PCM to chase down the problem. Ford still won't acknowledge that in these certain cases, the grey CPS is to blame. If this does happen and the cyclinder contribution fault comes up after a grey CPS is installed, swap back to a known working black CPS. Don't get suckered into thousands of dollars worth of repairs.

Thanks Pocket. It's hard troubleshooting when the vehicles in Arkansas and I'm in Florida. Good help though on the farm. I'll send this info. Father inlaw passed last month and Mom's dealing with a lot right now.

thanks again
