Smog bumps???

I was installing headers on my 88 bronco and inside the exaust porst are small bumps. sounds silly but does anyone know why their there? In the future Im going to be porting a set of heads to later be put on. Could these be ground down?

Smog bumps???

MMFF.has an article in it a year or so ago about them......says they picked up About 30hp by grinding them off....ground them off the heads in my '93 4x4 and counln't really tell the difference.with all the other mods had done.....but it still passed emissions test afterwards..........

I found the magazine on the net, But their is no way I'm Gonna find the article. Anybody know anything else about them?
