Head Interchangeability 302

I've got a '77 F100 that came with a 2V. I bought the truck and was told that the motor was overhauled about 10,000 miles ago.

I replaced the stock intake with an Edelbrock Performer and Edelbrock 4bbl card.

It broke a piston about 5,000 miles later!?

Found out at this time theywere .40 over. Heads were minus valve stem seals!? Had them completely redone.

About 2000 miles later. Blown head gasket! Replaced gasket and motor ran very good.

2000 miles later...broke crank!!! Bent valves! Wobble got into bottom of one piston! Bent pushrods!

I'd like to find out who rebuilt this motor! Hanging would be too good!!

So, I've started collecting parts. Bought crank w/bearings. Roller timing chain set. High volume oil pump. Stock cam and new lifters. The block is clean except for all the metal shavings, so I think knocking out the expansion plugs and a trip to the car wash after a line bore and cylinder rehone should get me set there.

Now, the heads. They are evidently stock as they have the rail style rockers.

I've got a chance to get a set off a 86 HO mustang. I believe it is the combustion chamber volume that I need worry about so as not to get too high a compression ratio. They take different rockers, but I'm aware of that.

Any input on other differences or problems I might encounter?

I've also been offered a set off a '72 truck. I could save shipping on the HO heads, so I'd prefer those but??

Thanks in advance!

ANY 289-302-351W HEAD WILL FIT YOUR 302. THE BEST FACTORY PRODUCTION HEAD IS THE '69-'70 351W HEAD. THEY HAVE 60.4CC COMBUSTION CHAMBERS WHICH ARE FINE FOR PUMP GAS BUT WILL GIVE YOU A LITTLE MORE COMPRESSION. THE INTAKE PORTS ARE SLIGHTLY LARGER FOR BETTER FLOW. THEY ALSO HAVE 1.84" & 1.54" VALVES, THESE A BIGGER THAN LATE MODEL 302, 351W HEADS THESE ARE NON-EMISSION HEADS,SO IF YOUR TRUCK HAS AN AIR PUMP THESE HEADS WONT WORK. THE EASIEST WAY TO ID THESE HEADS IS TO LOOK FOR THE "L" SHAPED WATER PASSAGE ON THE INTAKE SIDE. THEY ALSO HAVE 16 INTAKE BOLTS VS.14 BOLTS ON LATER MODELS. YOUR PERFORMER INTAKE ONLY HAS 14 BOLT HOLES, THIS IS FINE IT WILL STILL BOLT UP TO THE 16 BOLT HEADS
