I have a 70 302 truck motor that I am building and plan to put it back in the truck I have a Holley 600/650 Double Pumper mounted to a Edelbrock Perfomer intake is that a good Combination for a 302, I plan on a Cam and many other Mods but I was wanting some Ideas before I begin thanks
Sounds alot like what I'm doing, except the carb, same make, different model. I'm using the Holley 4160 with the vacuum secondaries on top of an edlebrock performer intake. I got a cam from CompCams, its just a tad bit more racy than stock. New CompCam lifters (of course) and a Ford Motorsport double roller chain (my old cam gear was beat up bad, is that common?). Mallory Unilite distributor (vacuum advance) and spark box. Also got a set of heddman headers which are going to be hooked to a less restrictive exhaust. I would tell you how that all works together, but I haven't gotten it done yet. Too damn cold! :-) Should get it mostly done next weekend. I do expect it to really run tho.
just a few suggestions, Windage tray, ARP fasteners for the rods/mains/heads. Full balance job on the crank/rods/pistons/flywheel/clutch/danmpner. If you want aluminum heads try the Edlebrock 302 heads to match the intake. If you want to keep the Iron heads then I suggest a three angle valve job, harden seats,back-cut the valves. mild port work on the bowls around the valves and along the runners to the intake and exhaust manifolds. Doug Thorley Tri-y headers, Flowmaster 3 chamber mufflers. Just a few thoughts.
best of luck

Here's a trick that I use on my 302 build ups. Put the pistons in backwards!!! The 302 uses an offset piston pin to load the piston to prevent noisey start ups. By putting the pistons in backwards it acts like increasing the rod length a few 1000ths! This increases dwell at TDC and can add up to 20 horsepower depending on the other mods. On a mild application 10 is more like it. Just make sure your chamfered ends of your rods are towards the OUTSIDE of your crank journals. I run cheap TRW forged pistons at about .003 clearance and do not have any piston slap on start up but it CAN happen and will go away shortly.
I learned this from Joe Stewart who is a renowned engine builder in So. Cali. and has built 400 HP 302's for CHEAP!!!
None that I've heard of!!! I think that by running a tight fitting cast or even a forged piston at .002-.003 you're not going to see any negatives. I would imagine you'd start hearing cold start up piston slap at looser forged piston to cylinder clearances or after a LOT of miles. But even then I think it's more of a nuisance than a reliability issue.
lvstang,
What type of heads are you using/recommend? Isn't the Isky cam from the article a little too much for a daily driver? What do you think would work better for every day? I'm thinking about a Crane energizer.
One motor had TFS TW heads that were the old pedestal mount heads that I had some trouble with. The stud mount heads have fixed all geometry problems.....supposedly. My current motor uses some warmed over Gt-40P heads that FPS in Anahiem built up for me. They run 230ish intake and 160ish exhaust. I usually will defer to my head porter for cam recommedations. The current cam I'm using is a custom grind from FPS with a retro-roller cam kit(it's an '83 block) If you go to Corral.net there's guys there that have forgot more than I'll ever know!!!
The HOT heads right now appear to be AFR heads with 165cc ports for 302's. 185cc for larger motors. About $1275 a set. TFS heads are aroung $1000. Edelbrock makes good stuff. There's so many. It's incredible the support Ford has now!!
