I have a carburated 302 engine. This engine is apart. I would like to know if it is possible to switch heads side to side, and would it work properly. Thanks for any input and suggestions.
No for the simple fact that the cam would not apropriately line up with the valves. Hence they intake roller on the cam would not be with the intake valve.
Ok well u have ur intake and ur exaughst valve on ur cam and they don't line up correctly if you have the heads reversed. And also ur return oil ports won't line up correctly. Also more information is required as to what year this motor is.
There is no left and right heads! They can be interchanged
but you need to watch out for the smog pump ports where the
smog pipes bolt to. If you do not have a smog pump or are
going to block them off it won't matter what head goes where.
If you look at the block you will notice one bank of cylinders
is ahead of the other. This takes care of valve alignment.
franklin, you are right. I called the local engine rebuilders and they agreed. You can buy inserts to block off the smog lines. Thanks for the information.
The only thing that you have to consider is that your bolt on brackets(ALT., PWRSTR., etc.) will have to be taken off one head and put on the other.
And if you already have them off the heads, NO PROBLEM.
