VGT for PSD???

Hello all!
I've been talking with a guy who has a wrecked big rig, and he has a holset HX55. This is a Variable geometry turbo which is otherwise the same as the HX50 and similar to the H2E.
My questions are:
Would the VGT spool like a smaller and boost like a bigger turbo?
EX: is it everything i've heard it is?
and how reliable are they?
Does anyone here know of someone running something like this???
Thanks guys!
dan

Edit: not so much a big rig as a cargo truck, but it had a 8 or 9 litre cummins, and this was it's turbo.

Not worth it IMO. The VGT part needs a computer to control and inputs to feed the computer. Chances of make it work and be less $$ than a modded H2E with mount kit are extremely slim! Actually you could probably have a sweet set of compound turbo's for what you would have into that. It has been done with the 6.0 VGT on a 7.3. I can't remember who did it though. Something like the Vanaecken Brother's or something like that. Can't find the info though

Hmmm. He's willing to sell me the turbo for $100. the controls are 100% pneumatic, and i think i could make the mount kit. Does that change your opinion?

and that changes my opinion a lot!!! but you will need a new intake plenum... the turbo might be facing the wrong way... and a custom downpipe

Maybe some but you still need to know how to regulate the pressure to get the spool and flow thru correct. For that kind of money it would be fun to play with and see if you can get it right.

yeah the vanaaeken bros tried it they just couldnt seem to get the control to work just right on it. theres somany things that go into controlling that turbo they came to the conclusion that you could have a set of bb compounds with more reliability for the amount of money it would take to start getting the vgt turbo to work right on our rigs. there vgt turbos on the 6ohs and after 03 they have been pretty good theres still issues with them stickin every once and a while. if it were me i would have a tn bb superduty turbo and a tn 66mm bb turbo feedin it with stage 2's that would be a heck of a tow setup

I'd like to have the adjustability. b/c of the truck it was off, i think i'll get it to screw around with. maybe i'll get it to work. for that money, it's not that big of a deal.
