Carb Replacement Advice for 351w

Hello everyone,
My first post here. I just bought a used 86 F250 w/ 351w and C6 transmission from a guy the next town over. The stock carb (possibly a Holley 4180?) has been removed and replaced with a older 2bbl carb that I can't identify sitting on top of an adapter. The previous owner has also installed a manual choke cable through the firewall and attached it to the carb. The transmission kickdown lever is not connected. The installation job does not inspire me with a lot of confidence, and the truck runs poorly (dies at idle, runs rich at higher rpm's). I would like to replace this carb with something that would be a drop-in (or close to it) replacement of the factory original. My area does not have emissions testing. What are my options? My primary concerns are cost, ease of installation and fuel mileage. It's a $600 truck, so I don't want to spend alot. Would getting one online or from the boneyard and rebuilding it be my best bet? Would any 4bbl from a 351w be an acceptable replacement? What brands and models should I look for? Any help would be much appreciated.

When I asked this question I was told to go with a 4v Holley about a 650CFM. You can get a new carb for about 250-300 if you do some looking. I wouldnt put another stock carb on there your gonna pay more if you order it new or rebuilt.

My windsor in my bronc has an edelbrock on it, they are a good carb. My '65 has one too. Don't remember the CFM's though. If a 650 is not available, go with a 600.

Thanks for your input everyone! I also did a lot of searching and reading other threads in this forum and found lots of advice there too.
In a spur of the moment decision, about 5 minutes ago actually, I jumped on a used Edelbrock 1406 from eBay. It was $100 plus shipping and was reported to be working well before it was replaced during a manifold/carb upgrade. It seemed like a good deal at the time. I just hope it works out.
I may need to get a kickdown linkage kit. Would I be able to get that from my local parts store, and about how much should it cost?
Thanks again!
