I'm looking to install train horns on a vehicle, and I'm not sure which ones will be good/safe to have. I asked in the Next Generation area since I figured they would be more tolerant of noise then the "older gentlemen" with regards to those things. I found air horns that put out 175 decibels from a site sponsor. Anyone think that is too loud to use on say... a jerk riding his stupid ten-speed bike in the center of the road? I've heard that 160 decibels will perforate eardrums instantaneously, but I don't think they'd sell something like that if it'd really do that. Would they?
i dont know much on air horns but my opinion it may push 175db at max psi.. im shure thats full blast (full psi release) if you want real good horns you can't be afraid to spend money on um. to me nothin sounds worse than those cheap air horn kits. ill let some1 else chime in on the FACTS the psi situation was just my opinion kinda like a auto maker sayin there motor pushes 325 hp... oh yea at 6000 rpm and then again i may be totally wrong!
The way some of these people drive aroud here, i would like the ones that would blow the hood open. Some of these people slow down in front of me just to **** me off, AND I,M NO LEAD FOOT AT ALL. Just ranting, i'll bump you back up. Good luck on your purchase.
Empiretc those horns look nice.
I need some new horns, mine corroded out from the inside out and now they just hiss until the pressure drops to less than 80 psi.
Kwik, if they still sound OK at 80# or less, you could install a pressure reulator inline. I did this to mine to have some control on the volume. Running mine at 70# is plenty loud enough, no need for 200#. Hopefully this will keep me from getting a ticket if I get pulled over for them. It will only cost you $25 or so to do it (a lot less than new horns). Just another idea.
Joe
I have Siege Engineering Strategic Seperates, 5 horn bundle with a 5 gallon tank, air compressor at 200psi. It "was" extremely loud (to me at least), ive gotten used to the sound, it doesnt make me jump anymore. I was thinking of daisy chaining some hot dog style tanks under the toolbox to add volume, and then add two large-*** tugboat horns like my buddy has.

No need bro, those things you have are plenty loud already. They will wake up the dead.
I have too. I got used to mine and it doesn't seem (to me at least) that they are as loud as they were when I first got them. They are though, cuz people still jump.
Dan, my wife bought these for me. the trumpets themselves are ABS. They are quality, though, and it is really easy to swap them off the solenoid (if you wanted to ).

The link that you supplied says that the horns are metal. Also the price is very good too. Mine are mounted up on the headache rack so I need to find a set that is straight across.
I listened to the sound clip on the Klein website.
hhmmmm... that is the seller my wife bought the system from. remember, I destroyed one of the horns earlier this year . these may be better horns in the same style since my wife paid ~$200 for everything last december.
these would mount up great on a headache rack. the mounting bracket is really sturdy. of course if you do that, you would want the setup that has one horn facing the rear .
You can get real train horns on ebay for $300 and up to a $1000 or so. Do a search for Nathan, Leslie in the memorabilia section I think it is, then railroadiana....
I wish I could afford a set, I'm tired of taking a chance and getting skunked by knockoffs. The larger the base diameter, the better it will sound.
On the lighter side, my neighbors wife's VW Jetta (I think that's what it is, they all look the same to me) has a horn that no kidding sounds like a clown horn, ya know when they squeeze thier red noses LOL
