accelerator cable

I am wondering if an accelerator cable for an 1980 ford truck will work
in my 65...

My 65 has a cable operated linkage...but the cable is in not great shape...
the engine side of the cable has come loose from the mount...granted it still works... it looks like the 80s cable... AutoZone.com | Shopping | Parts | Product Detail - Accelerator Cable

has a return spring built in??? Im lacking the spring for my truck... I just bought an Eddlebrock Carb...Ford Adapter...and the other cable holder thing...
I think it needs a return spring...Im not sure...never fooled with a carburetor much.

Any way just wondering if that cable will work...I cant find one that is for a 65 anywhere. not even lmc. I think the length is about what is on the truck.
If not got any recomendations??
Thanks!

The last throttle cable I bought I got right from my local Ford dealer in Havre Montana when I still lived there. That was about 7 years ago.

The part number is C5TZ-9A758-AH and shows in the Ford parts catalog as being 20.00 inches long. Give that a try and see if there is still one around some where.

As for your throttle return spring, go down to your local parts house, Napa, Car-quest and so on they sell generic throttle return spring kits, in fact I think that is what I have on my truck right now. It will bolt down some where on your intake and then hook to the throttle of the carb.

The factory return spring for a 352 was C5TZ-9737-C and the Ford parts book calls out having a .75 inch diameter, 5.51 inches long and has 17 coils.

Lokar also makes some nice cables, I'm going to try one this time as the factory one on my 66 broke and hung the throttle wide open.

You should be able to make it work.

Went to direct linkage, no cable on 65F100 w/ 302. Would post pic's but for some reason when I try the 'create album' the entire online window closes.

There no cable listed for a 1965 F100 with a 302, because the 302 engine was not available till 1969.

Exactly, just thought I would mention since if recall 65fordbuy's slick has a 302. I have pic's of the throttle link in gallery, also, the link below is a pic of the throttle pedal I used. It would require drilling a hole in the firewall the dia. of the throttle arm, and slightly larger. Anyhow, thought I would throw another option in the mix, also got an urge to chime in and add my $.02 .

I have a pedal and cable form a 88 F250 installed in my 64.

I had to do some cutting and welding of the pedal arm to clear the brake pedal but it works well.

Attached to a 472 cubic inch big block with EFI.

As for direct linkage, well they went to cables for a reason. Direct linkages can bind and cause a nasty full throttle experience. Also any cable type that is taught or a little short on the install can upon the natural torque roll of an engine or breakage of motor mounts can cause the throttle to engage... Exciting to say the least and potentially fatal...You are just along for the ride at that point untill your brians says kill the ignition....

well, I spent some time on the cable in my truck...I shaved down the plastic around the wire a bit...used some good adhesive..shoved it in the hole...plan on clamping it as well...
still comes out to nearly the front of the block...but with all the crooks to get it lined up right with the carb it may be ok.
It has the ball style connecting end..instead of the studded kind that I have seen in these trucks...so I have no idea which is right... My edelbrock has the right size ball fitting.so I guess that will work out.

love to see some pics of how you guys have your rigs hooked up.

Even though I got the cable fixed it is still way too long nearly 25 inches into the engine bay... curl it back to fit and the assembly will not work.

I found a spectre universal cable....AutoZone.com | Shopping | Accessories | Product Detail - Spectre Universal Braided Stainless Throttle Cable Kit
like the lokar only I can get it at any part store including jegs and summit

and I did more digging on the 1980 cable...
AutoZone.com | Shopping | Parts | Product Detail - Accelerator Cable
it aparently is 14.5 inches into the engine bay
That would be nearly exactly what I need.... no way to make it work?

With time, money and the right tools you can make almost anything work in any project you might try. Example, I am putting a 4.6L MOD motor in my old pickup. Was it made for it? No. Will it work? With some time and money and fab skills it will.

Weather or not the 80's for truck cable will bolt right on and work, I can not tell you but you could certainly buy it, try it and if it looks like no chance, take it back. The original cable was 20 inches, I am not sure what you are running for a carb, but my 360 has a Holley and I still have the factory cable and it just hooks right up with a slight bend in the cable, as it exits the fire wall to the left side and the throttle hook up is more center. I would be afraid that 14 inches might be too short, not sure on that but that is just a guess from looking at my cable.

Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.

Jeff

Well I bought the spectre universal cable...It works GREAT!
I had to remove the ball joint on the pedal...and drill out the hole a bit..
but it looks and works great....fired the truck up for the first time and
broke in the cam...no exhaust...LOUD!....it was great.

That is good to hear that you got your truck up and running now!

How does it run with that new engine in it? I like the look of the Ford SVO dress up stuff, I just wish they made it for "FE" engines or even my new MOD motor project. There is a much better selection for parts on the 302/351 and 429/460 engines than the I listed above.

Why did you chose the 302 over another engine combination?
