Are you using or losing oil, as in the notorious head gasket fiasco with our engines. Also certain oils seem to get used more than others. I have noticed that in every vehicle I used Mobil 1 in I used more oil than with other oils. How much oil are you going through, a quart/1000 mi or more or less? In general the Ford modular engines enjoy very low oil consumption. I use Motorcraft 5W-20 in my 2002 4.6 and at worst use a very negligible amount in my 5,000 oil change intervals.

2-3 quarts every 3k oil change. using penzoil. its not leaving a puddle and runs fine. i wouldnt suspect a headgasket.

If you went w/FORD's normal 5000 mile oil change schedule you'd never need to change oil?

Oil consumption makes me think PCV & valve stem seal issues. Some EGR problems may blow oil.

I agree, try a new PCV valve first.
