A few notes on a Flowmaster upgrade

Awhile back I sought opinions on redoing the exhaust on my mostly OEM 98 F150 to get a little more "muscular" sound from it's 4.6 Tritan and after much thought I decided to replace my perfectly good OEM single exhaust muffler & tailpipe with a Flowmaster Delta 50 series single-in dual-out exhaust kit.
The kit was one of those ebay specials and it included the upgraded Delta 50 Flowmaster muffler, dual tailpipes, offset inlet pipe and all clamps and hangers needed.
After finally figuring out the drivers side tailpipe routing it went it fairly easily and quickly. The clamps seem to do a good enough job so welding isn't necessary. The new dual tailpipes cleared the spare tire, shocks, leaf springs, brake line and rearend vent line just like they were promised to do and when all was tightened down both pipes stuck out the exactly the same length. I didn't have to cut nor bend the new pipes at all, perfect fit.
I'm probably going to add some nice tips.

Performance wise the truck seems to be alittle quicker. I found myself having to let off the throttle more than usual. Course it could be that the sound was keeping me on the throttle more than normal but I found myself having to force myself to let off much more than normal.
I live in a very hilly locale and the auto trans is always constantly shifting out of OD to high and back again, so much so that many times I just turn off OD. Well, it didn't seem to hunt as much now. The slight hills that would usually cause a downshift now don't. Again it could just be perception but if the performance is better I'll know come next fillup.

The sound. Well what can I say, it sounds very sweet. I paid alittle more to upgrade from the std 40 series to the Delta 50 and it is definitely more mellow in the cabin yet sweet and low outside. It is louder than stock inside the cabin but not by too much and and about double the decibles of OEM outside. At idle and low speeds it has a very sweet very noticable low rumble. I saw many heads turning to follow me as I went by. Low rumble aside, they'll definitely bark when nailed
Younger folks would probably think the Delta 50 is too mellow but I personally don't like folks hearing me coming several blocks before I get there ......

All in all a very nice upgrade for my truck that has nearly 125K miles on her.

A little note on the OEM setup. I was highly impressed. The muffler & tailpipe had nearly 125K miles on them and they not only didn't need replacing but they appeared to have alot more serviceable life left in them. I really hated cutting them out and wouldn't if'n I hadn't already dropped the $$$'s on this kit. Unfortunately the clamping system is so tight and ridgid that they can't be reused due to having to cut them out. I did leave the OEM frame mounted clamping hardware in place just in case I (or someone else) wanted to go back to OEM.
The entire OEM exhaust system is top of the line. There was no play or loose components anywhere and there was no sign of rust eating through. Ford definitely knows how to build a pickup truck......
And yeah, I like the sound

I went from a Flowmaster to a non-polished stainless Magnaflow. My Flowmaster rotted away after about 4 years. The Magnaflow seems to flow better and has more torque than the Flowmaster did. All I changed was the muffler, left the same dual tailpipes. 3" in with dual 2.5" tailpipes. You might look into a Magnaflow if your Flowmaster ever dies on ya.

I had a 40 series myself and painted it often to try to keep the rust down.

I think the weight savings is what makes the truck faster. The stock muffler is as big as the gas tank

Flowmaster

I almost went with the Magnaflow kit but thought that it must have been a cheaper muffler since it priced under the Flowmaster. Oh well live and learn

I didn't have to drill any new holes for the hangers. I used existing frame rail holes for the two tailpipe hangers, (had to bend them out 180 degrees but it was easy) and I bent the hanger for the front of the muffler and bolted it to an existing hole in the old OEM muffler clamp assembly.
I had more trouble getting the tailpipe routing down than I did any other part of the installation.
Good luck

I have universal cats. One for each pair. I think they are dynomax. They made my truck sound like it has a cat back and it still has the stock muffler.
