intercooler explosion

I've got a modified '03 6.0 with a bigger turbo(and a 1971 body), and I keep blowing the end caps off the charge-air cooler at about 55 psi. I know the '99-'00ish solid aluminum coolers can handle the extra boost, but will they fit? I know they don't flow as well, but if they fit in the 6.0 it'll save me money I don't have for a banks or spearco charge-air cooler. has anyone fit an older one in a newer one to cheaply resolve this problem? thanks

you can see a pic or two in the gallery for 1971. it's on the 2nd page by date. Does this mean you don't know about swapping in an intercooler from an older one?

I know 7.3 guys can swap in the 6.0 cooler as an upgrade......I would think the opposite might be possible.

Can't say I know anyone who dropped a 7.3 cooler in the 6.0 though since as you mentioned it's a downgrade.

Well, I'm sure I could swap out a buddy for free versus $1300, I even have a spare 6.0 intercooler for when I blow one up. Maybe later this summer my wife will let me spend the money. reliability is the biggest issue for now since I'm sitting on over 500 rwhp

I don't know of anyone that has ever done it. However, there isn't much involved in putting in the 6.0 in place of the 7.3. Going backwards should be a matter of the right adapters and clamps. If you have someone to swap with, all I can say is try it! It's not that involved if for some reason it doesn't work.

Now that I've looked at your pics, swapping intercoolers should be a walk in the park for you considering the rest of the truck!

Are you talking about blowing the boots off the IC tubes? If so after you clean them up try some hairspray inside the boot and on the tube to give it a little extra sticking power.

I wish... I'm talking about blowing the plastic caps off the sides of the aluminum core. my boots and clamps are fine. I was thinking on the older super duty the tube ports were in a different position than on the plastic capped 6.0, which would require tube modification, and I don't want to have to modify my tubes and my friends, it's just not worth it to modify all those tubes, since I'll probably have the money for the nice one by july or so.

Some of the end tank tubes are 3.0 inch and some are 3.25 inch. Worst case you will need adapter boots and possibly some clamps to go from one size to the other. There is also the possibility that they don't stick through as much now that I think of it, requiring longer boots. But again, it's an easy adjustment.

I have a 6.0 intercooler I got for my truck but never did and probably never will put it in. My understanding is with that exception it is a direct swap.
