It doesn't help they are making a pretty good profit by whatever measure you use, and still receive tax breaks. Also, having two ex oil men in the Whitehouse doesn't help.
I could except their profits a lot better if they were taxed like eveybody else
and still wonder what their actual profit is
I am sure like about every other buisiness they show only what they have to

unfortunately for a lot of people, Enron showed that corporations can make the books look like they want. I know sarbanes oxley is supposed to change that and make the CEO's responsible, but when there is money involved people find a way. I have had personal experience with a company that made the books look one way and skimmed the profits. Left me looking for a job. The Regis family also did it with Adelphia cable which also affect me.
Did I read that P&L sheet correctly???? They paid less than 10% in income tax???? Now **THAT** REALLY pisses me off. I paid a much larger percentage. So since you like talk about percentage, Aklim, explain that one to me. I'm still waiting on the answer to the question I asked umpteen posts ago...
BTW, I stand corrected on your spending x to make y -- I totally misread what you were saying there. DOH!!!

I don't follow. What they paid in income taxes is what is written into the tax code. You are a private individual they are a corporation. Under certain circumstances, my personal corporation pays less income tax than I do.
USD is hosed, Other places are demanding oil, speculators are running up the market. Things 1 year ago are way different than today.
Looks like I opened up a can of worms here, I just thought I would inform this great group of people as to what and how much profits the big oil companies were making off the backs of the poor American workers and all the rest of the world. With only about 3% of the produced gas and diesel staying in this great country of ours, with the rest going out of the country. Thats one of the reasons that I can drive down to Mexico and buy regular diesel (not ulsd) for under $3.00 a gallon. They can sell it there without all the government regulation and environmental issues that we have. If for some reason I have offended anybody by the first post on this thread I am sorry. But I stand by my feeling that the big cooperations are raping this country. Now lets all have a cold beer.

I think you answered your own question there, government regulation is causing majority of these issues.
My problem with this whole discussion.. if people are soooo upset about the "record profit" oil companies are making, why not go out and get in on some of it by BUYING STOCK!! But look!, it's not a wise choice because of the low return on investment.
I don't like the high fuel prices as much as the next person, but as long as they (oil companies) are supplying a product that us individuals either need or desire, they are free to charge as much as we are willing to pay. Isn't that the way most any free market is run, to get the most return for the product or service you are providing??
i own my own company as well, and I paid more % wise than that too.
you forgot to add, they are a corporation SUBSIDIZED by the government, DOH.
When Toyota moved into Georgetown, KY, they are "subsidized" too. When Holiday Inn builds a hotel in a town, they too are "subsidized". When Wal*Mart moves into a town, they too are "subsidized". What else is new? If you are big enough, you are given breaks because you can tell me to take a jump and move your shop elsewhere and I'll hurt. When you are a small fry like me, they can tell you to go jump in the lake. Take GM. When they want to shut down the plant in Janesville, WI, the town shakes and gives them some spiffs, aka "subsidy", etc, etc.

they are subsidized by cities because the revenue they will get in sales tax (2% around here). a walmart close by was almost given the land where they are building (~$2 million worth) but the city will get that back in a hurry when it opens. when you are as small as us, we are not given those incentives. your GM example meant putting a town under (lost jobs). oil "closing" would put a nation under. there are reasons the rich get richer. i am all about business and making money (go capitalism!!), but I am not making enough for tax incentives, or broke enough to feed from the tit.
i am not for capping or for anything like they imposed on Microsoft, but something needs to be addressed. politicians are focusing more on the people who tried to turn a quick dollar in the housing market (a didn't read the fine print) since they are so worried about the effects on the economy, all while the price of crude is having way more disastrous effects.
It's funny cuz it's true. We can b**ch and moan about the execs and politicans and anyone else involved in the "oil conspiracies" , but we all know that we would like to have their income.
