550hp 460
stick with dual plane intake for good low end torque numbers. the Weinend (?)Stealth Intake is probably the best one out there for this application.
stick to a 260 duration cam with around .5" lift, preferably a dual pattern intake with more duration on the exhaust if using stock heads.
don't really need the early heads if rebuilding. the later D3VE heads can be made to flow as good as the early heads, easier and cheaper to find and larger chambers gives you more choices with pistons to maintian 9 - 9.5: compression ratio so you can still use pump gas (although it will be hi-test). the only down side to d3ve heads, they should be converted to screw in rockers and adjustable drivetrain where as the early heads already have the screw in rockers.
either head needs a good port job on the exhaust and conversion to at least 2.19 intakes to get up around the 550hp range. nothing major that a competent machine shop can't ahndle (or you can do the port job yourself with guidance from reincarnation-automotive.com website, just have to pay the $25 registration fee)
with that being said, with the money invested in upgrading stock heads (larger valves, porting, studs, springs, rockers, etc) you are getting pretty close to the cost of aftermarket heads like the Edlebrocks or TFS street heads. they will blow away the stock heads in most depatments and will allow you to upgrade in the future (because once you have 550hp, you will want 600hp, then 650, then 700, etc)
go to 460ford.com for lots of info on the 385 series engine and lots of good build info in the archives.
550hp is very easy to obtain, just need to select the right parts and do the right modifications to your parts.
