I just had surgery for bladder cancer last week. I have spent the past 8 weeks since the first symptoms going through tests, scans, blood work, surgery and the last week being a very uncomfortable post op recovery.
The worst part about this is that the doctors can't/won't tell you anything hopeful along the way. There isn't any "end game" in sight for most of the process. There too many possibilities, too many options. One thing just seems to lead to another and I went through it almost robotically being more worried every day and tending more and more to imagine the worst. Mostly, I worried about the people I might leave and what they would do, or how radically my life would change with some of the treatments they were talking about.
I am amazed at the true miracles that medical science can do today that were unthinkable just 10 years ago. Cancer used to be a death sentence. Today, most (including colon cancer) are very treatable and the cure rates are going up all the time.
It helped me greatly to get all the information about it that I could (just Google it). Read the information to each other. Examine all the alternatives. It felt like knowing as much as possible about the disease took it out of the dark and shed the light of hope on it. I was also able to better dialogue with my surgeon (who had the bedside manner of a robot).
Knowing that good friends and family were praying for me was uplifting. That will come for you in part from all your good friends here and this thread.
Help Darlene keep a positive frame of mind. You do the same. The fat lady ain't sung here. Stay busy and divert the mind with activities throughout the day.
Do not avoid talking about the fear around this. Women, especially, need to talk out their emotions, while us guys tend to go stoic. Just don't horribilize it. It hasn't won.
Steve Jensen (ssj7kids) lost his wife to cancer a few years ago and shared with my wife, Diane, to take care of herself. You guys are a team, but you aren't going to be much help to Darlene if you go to pieces. You will need to be good to yourself in order to be of help. Don't mope. Get in some truck time.
I couldn't have been much help on this a week ago. It is a tough journey. My method was to keep a low profile about it and do the things I mentioned above, but today was my first good news. The pathology came back good and my doctor says I will be out of these woods soon. That day will come for you two as well. Just keep your faith stay the course of positive vibes as a team.
God bless you and Darlene. Our prayers are with you. Chin up, Dude. You guys can beat this thing!
P.S.: Keep sending me those joke emails. I'll be doing the same. We have to get some laughs in here, buddy.

Dick and Darlene, we will be praying for you both. My grandfather has had colon cancer for several years now, and by his demeanor you would never know it. Today's treatments are pretty amazing.
It's been a rough year for us all, so far, hasn't it?

Dick; Sorry to hear this. You are in our prayers. Like RJ said keep your chin up. We went through this two years ago with my step-son same thing. Now he is Cancer Free. We thank GOD every day. GOD BLESS.
Dick, my prayers are with you. I enjoyed the short visit I had with you and Darlene a couple of years ago. I think she's got to be a strong woman to be able to handle you and I'm sure she'll be able to handle anything that's thrown at he.
The wife of the guy I have working for me has also just recently been rediagnosed with the rotton "C", she's 50 and has been fighting with monster since she was 18. I am praying for the both of them.

Hi Dick, you and your wife will certainly be in my prayers. I don't know you personally but your comments and good nature have brought me a great deal of laughs since I've been part of this group. God bless you and your wife, He will get you through this.
