up pipes?

Just got a new to me 2001 f250 and see talk of up pipes, are these the pipes coming off the exhaust manifolds and up to the back of the turbo? If they are leaking how does this effect the motor? Thanks for any info still educating myself about diesels. New to this site and it looks like alot of great info located here.

when its leaking you will see black soot were the upipes meet the cast iron piece. If they have soot usally it means you will lose boost which makes you lose power and MPG.

The exhaust pressure inside these pipes is what is used to operate the turbo. When this is leaking out, there's less drive pressure forcing the turbine wheel. In turn you get less boost, which means less air. With the same amount of fuel, you get more black smoke due to less airflow going into the engine, less efficency and lower MPG's at most.

By the way, welcome to FTE!

Welcome, as has been said it takes away drive presure from the turbo. Less boost = less power.

I have not seen you on here for a while.

Guys, this guy will really help you out. He helped me through my rotor and pad replacement. I called him and he explained everything I needed to know. Don't hesitate to give him a call.

thanks again.
