I am about to throw 35"'s on my F-150 and need to change the gear ratio. Currently I have 3.31's in the rear. After doing a quick calc., I believe I need something close to 3.90's (don't know what is available for 4.6L rear end, however). If someone wants to check my math, I have the stock 255/70R16 radials on there now. My question is what ratios are available for my truck, and which will work best with the 35"'s? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Actually, there are a whole bunch of gear ratios available for your truck. You have an 8.8" rear end and an 8.8" front end with reverse cut gears. My truck (97 4x4 supercab) came factory with 3.55 limited slip. It was a dog when I put the 35's on. I went to 4.56's and that gave me a 3.97 final drive ratio. At 75 mph, the tach reads 2500 rpm. I also have a Superchip that raises the rev limiter and takes out the top speed limiter. I have never hit either. If I would have gone to 4.10's, I would havehad a 3.56 final ratio...back to stock. Plan on spending about $1100-$1300 to have everything done and out the door. It's also a good idea to put on an aluminum rear diff cover that has a larger capacity than stock because it helps with cooling. My truck feels better than it did stock and is still getting 15-17 mpg. Hope this helps.
4.10 and 4.56 should be available from Reider Racing and 4wheelparts. If you have the 5.4-liter then your rear diff is a Ford 9.75. Your front is an IFS 8.8. With 35s, I'd go with 4.56.
