cold fuel = good
the warmer the fuel the higher the intake temp, and more likely to run into detonation
Fuel Coolers at Flex-a-lite Consolidated
Cools fuel prior to fuel rail. Cooler fuel increase horsepower, minimizes vapor lock. Ideal for use with high volume fuel pumps. Not limited to fuel cooling applications. Gator Clips mounting hardware included.
My dad sold a ptient for a vapor type setup, he was able to get 100 mpg with a 250 straight 6 chevy. though the total package was tuned to run this way.
I would not say this would work either way, just wanted to share what I know about the subject matter.
He claimed something like 40 MPGs too.
However, I think this guy's setup was something that GM had tried out as an experiment or something, and other parts of the engine had been modified to accommodate the lean mix, which I took to mean compression ratio, cam timing, etc. It was setup to run on such a hot mix... It wasn't just a heater hose wrapped around the fuel rail.
Temperature of the fuel (gasoline) and temperature of the charge (air and fuel mix) are two different animals.
From what I have read, part of the reason we have (medium pressure) pressurized fuel systems was to overcome the vapor-lock problem caused by rising underhood temperatures, as smog controls and tuning changed.
Cool fuel is more dense, packing more molecules into the same physical space. A timed injector pulse would then inject more fuel into the air stream over a given period of time.
Warmer fuel will break into smaller molecules (hey, I haven't measured, I just read it somewhere) and vaporize more completely, more quickly.
Cooler air is more dense and carries more oxygen, but it is heavier and moves more with more difficulty. Too cool, it could also re-condense fuel into larger droplets and away from vapor state.
Warmer air is lighter and less dense, moving more easily but carrying less oxygen per given volume. It also aids in the vaporization of fuel and helps prevent re-condensation.
So what's better? Warm air/warm fuel? Cool air/warm fuel? Warm air/cool fuel? Or cool air/cool fuel? Got me! Too many variables for the fuzzy brain to consider.
