Do your lights and radio and everything else seem to be working normally?

I would start with checking your fuses.

Welcome to FTE. When your father had it and ran it out of fuel, did he keep trying to start it, not knowing the gauge was wrong? If so check the starter. The starters get hot fast. Does the WTS light come on? How about CEL light on or OD light? Did you check for any codes?

Check the starter relay just behind the pass side battery. Also check the voltage at one of the batts while cranking the truck.

Hey, I just had the same exact thing happen to me last night. I was driving home from work, and I noticed my fuel gauge was on E. At the stop light it started chugging (loping) and died. I think it was out of fuel... So I got a tank and filled it up with diesel, and now it will only crank and puff out a bunch of white smoke. Since it was like 3 in the morning I just had someone tow it to this place called reliable diesel, im going to stop by there on the way home from school to see if they know what might be the problem. I didnt get the CEL to come on.

Not really knowing either way, could it be that it is still trying to get all the air out of the system?

Yup, turned out that was the problem. The dudes at Reliable Diesel ended up using a hint of starting fluid and hooked up some power to my battery (it was just about dead). It ran awkward for a while but it runs great now....

I guess ill watch the fuel gauge more closely lol
