First off its a 1994 e-150 with a 302 and I am not sure wat tranny (all i know is its AOD). The gear selector reads...P R N OD 2 1....if i remember correctly off the top of my head. On the end of the shifting arm on the column there is a button to disengage OD.
Now onto the symtoms. Leaving it in OD while goin down the road it seems to shift really quickly into 3rd gear i think it is, (the one right before OD) at about 25-30mph. This causes it to baug way down and than once you get to bout 35-45ish, the motor seems to rev up a lil bit and than once you get round 45-50ish, it will finally go into OD.
Now if you were to leave it in D instead of OD, there is no problem. Same with shifting it from 1, 2, D and once you get bout 50, push the button into OD.
My general thought bout this would be the kickdown cable somehow became stretched and needs adjusting, but would like your opinions on this.
The reason I am thinking the kickdown cable is because I have a similiar problem on my f150 now and than where the cable pops off the top of the motor and I get these symptoms.
If this would be better answered in the transmission section than let me know, but I figured I would start here since I am not entirely convinced it is tranny related.
Your transmission is an AODE (4R70W) and therefore has no cable. The cable on your truck isn't a kickdown cable either. Its a Throttle Pressure cable. The AODE is an all electronic transmission. It is controlled by input from the various engine sensors: MLP, TPS, RPM, Speed Sensor, etc...
Have you checked level and condition of the fluid. Is it full? How does the fluid look? It should have a pale red color and have a slightly sweet smell.
Does the OD Off button light work? It should light up the word "off" when you press it. If its working and the transmission has set a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) the light will flash. If it has a code, it needs to be read.
If indeed it is applying 3rd gear early and there are no codes, you likely have an internal problem. Likely an internal leak that is applying the intermediate clutches.
You really need to have a professional shop do a proper diagnosis.
As far as the fluid level goes, I am not sure because the end of the dipstick is always wet and shows full. The fluid color is a nice pale red just like it came out of the bottle. The OD off button works but sometimes it will flash but doesn't flash all the time. Another thing I have noticed is that the check engine light comes on sometimes, mostly when slowing down n speeds under 50 I think.
