I recently traded an 01 excursion for an 05. They both had the v 10 with 3.73 gears and both were stock except for K&N filters. On the 01 with 90K miles I used to get 10 to 11 mpg consistently around town (calculated). With the 05 I am getting About 8.5 mpg. They both had 285-75-16 tires. Any ideas as to why the drop in mileage? Ideas for improvement? Thanks.
8.5 sounds about right towing VERY heavy loads. That is what I typically average on long runs, towing a load of about 11,000 lbs.
If you are only getting 8.5 WITHOUT a heavy load, something is wrong. If I stay under 70 mph in overdrive on long trips I can come close to 16 mpg. average.
Remember, what some of these guys call a "Lie-0-Meter" is nothing more than a fuel flow guage, that "averages" only over a VERY short time. I have seen it indicate down to about 3 mpg during wide open throttle up steeper grades fighting a heavy head-wind.
Ho wmany miles on the 08? It's always been siad that the mileage will be real low 'out of the box', but should improve over time as the engine gets broke in.
OK. Since I actuall READ your question, I'll try to give a response that fits. I have an '05 with a V-10 and 373s. I get about 11 mpg on a tank with about half city and half highway driving. I bet that the 8 or so mpg that you are getting in town is about what I get. I know that I get upwards of 16 on the highway.
I don't know how you were getting 11 in town with the other rig.
I don't think that anything is wrong with the newer rig, so no suggestions for fixing it.
For what I call my 'severe' city commute...(i.e. 4 miles one way total city with stopping for traffic and lights about every 1/2 mile)...I got a solid 8 with my 3.73's.
You may want to check your 4x4 hubs...you may have a STUCK LOCKED HUB causing excess drag on your driveline.
Jack up the front of your Ex and see if the front wheels free-wheel...if not...you've got a stuck hub.
If they both free-wheel...and your commute is like mine...i.e. EXTREME CITY...I believe the '05 V10 has more power than the '01...more power generally means less mpgs...
Thanks for the replies..That makes me feel better, also the more HP makes sense. Maybe the 01 was super broken in. Sad truth is , it wouldn't matter if it got 4mpg..its what I am gonna drive. I just got another 01 with a 7.3 which I am going to fully restore so I will Have one of each of the best vehicle on the road..IMHP
05's do not have more power than 01's or any year for that matter. A stuck hub surely won't account for a 3 mpg difference. But you can check them by reaching behind the wheel and turning the half-shaft. You shouldn't need to jack it up
There is no such thing as a "fuel flow guage". The MPG meter counts injector pulse and width them compares it to the odometer to get MPG.
Are both 285 tires the same brand, same inflation? Was the 01's PCM corrected for the tire size change?
I think the difference is more about the odometer than anything else but that's just me...

You are 100% correct to correct my faulty information.
I knew that early V10's had lower HP numbers...and it was the 1999 V10 which came with 275 HP...HOWEVER Ford bumped the HP on the V10's to 310 in the 2000 model year where it has remained until the 3V came along...I just wasn't sure of when Ford bumped the HP...they were faster than I had remembered!
But you are correct...ALL Ex's got the 310 HP version...so my info was WRONG...and I appreciate accurate information and do not like to spread mis-information...so thanks...first one is on me!
I guess "restore" was a poor choice of words. I have to replace inserts on front seats, Minor body work, Repaint, Replace actuators on all 5 doors, Install warn hubs, Some type of lift to correct sagging front end, Radius rods, anti sway bars front and rear, replace broken cd changer, Brians truck shop tranny, etc., etc., etc.
