well well well ... I learned the hard way that those plastic bed liners with motor oil spilled on them dont hold a wooden crate very well .... especially when the crate has over 1000 lbs of brake rotors and the tail gate was only latched on one side (I didnt know ... should have made sure it was properly latched) AND I DEFFINATLY SHOULD HAVE TIED THE CRATE DOWN.....
barely stepped on the gas going away from the stop line and the crate slid back (as if it were on butter)..... ripped the half latched tailgate off the truck and exploded on impact of the cement (rotors and wooden crate pieces all over the intersection ...... the tailgate swung around and hit the side of the truck so now I have a dent and bashed up tailgate... on top of the embarrassment
lesson learned!!!
and a tip for everyone else .... don't accidentally spill oil on the plactic liners
OUCH!!! That sucks dude. My buddy one time had a engine in the back of his truck, untied and the truck was a 84 beat up ol ford. Well he seen me coming up to him and he started hot rodding a little, turned a corner and the engine slid back, busted his tailgate open and the engine rested, teetering right on the end of the tailgate haha. I stopped and we shoved the engine back in his truck, but man I didnt stop laughing the whole time!
I lost my spare 16"tire off the back of my 78. I picked up a slip tank and put the spare between the tank and the box side standing upright. I was on circle drive and from 1st Ave to AVe C I lost the tire. The tank slid over and the tire rolled out without me noticing it or anyone honking at me. I went back and it was no where in sight. Someone probally picked it up. It had a lot of good rubber on it.
My fault also. My truck had no endgate and still doesn't today. Now I strap things in.
I lost a couch one time on the highway.I just happened to glance in my mirror and see it bouncing down the highway or I probably wouldn't have noticed. It was an old one that was built like a rock so all that happened was it got a few rips and tears, I still used it for a while afterwards.I am sure a new one would have exploded on impact.
I lost my basket with my work clothes in it the second day I had my truck.Lost it in an intersection and by the time I got turned around and went back, someone had picked it up.All because I forgot to put up the tailgate. And the last thing the saleman said to me,"your not driving a car anymore Monica, remember to lock your tailgate".I hadnt even put it up.Big mistake, big life lesson. Thanks for sharing guys.
Well i have pulled flatdecks around wstern Canada and have lost 1 roll of foam which I consider a great record. I lost the foam by Russell Manitoba I kinda watched it blow out.
However I have bent/scratched machines in transport tough.
I just lost a battery the other day. I didn't think that plastic on plastic would slide that much. I was taking it to the shop to charge it. And when I got to the shop it wasn't there. I found it on the way back home at 5:30. It was at the side of the road, and it had hit the road hard, and rolled..... $100 Marine battery barely used....

I had 5 batteries aswell that went off at the same time the crate went...
as for fines... I had everthing off the road in less then 10 minutes and dropped off at the scrap yard in 15min .....(pays to have friends at the coffee shop accross the street)
as I was pulling out of the scrap yard the police drove by slowly in front of me .... stopped, looked ... and and then continued on their way
(I was clearing the intersection so everyone behind me was stopped.. no injuries thank god!!$$)
I had a battery slide on to the fan and mess up a rad because there was no hold down, lesson learned there in a hurry.
I`ve never lost anything off a truck so far, mostly just blind luck.
touch wood i've never lost anything either and i've hauled some retarded loads of lumber around... especially during deck season!! i'm usually pretty careful about tying stuff down though!!
