My Grandfather bought a 77 new, and I loved it when I was younger.
My father had one, then bought the 77 my grandfather bought new.
I started driving with the 77 my Grandfather bought new. Still got it, and bought another 79. Wish I had more money and room. I'd like to buy a couple more of them.
the main thing I like about the old trucks is knowing that we still have metal around us instead of fiberglass or whatever. right now I'm 16. when I was younger my dad had an '81 chevy. I loved that truck. now it's sitting under the shed right next to the '79 F100 waitin' for a restore. when I see an older vehicles on the road I admire them. I think in the vehicles own eyes it sees all this aerodynamic junk and wonders, "What is the world coming to?"
easy to work on
My dad owned a white '73, white '74 service truck, red '75, blue '77, and a red '79 so I grew up in them and learned to drive in them.
My first vehicle in high school was a '76 with a 460...learned to caused trouble it.
I'm a mechanic and i have to work on the new, tight-spaced plastic stuff all day. So it's really nice to have something thats just all iron, lots or room to work, easy to repair. Plus, i really like the hoods on old fords, the hood itself just looks tough.
I like that these things were actually built to do work. Most newer trucks are built for the average suburban user who places a lot more importance on comfort and cool colors and rims rather than just plain old functionality.
Personally...i always like "low-option" things. I dont like power windows, or air conditioning, even radios, or onstar or all the other stupid stuff they put into vehicles these days. Just one more thing to break i always think. I like my vehicle to do exactly what i tell it to do, i dont like to spend 5 minutes pushing buttons trying to figure out how turn the damn oil change moniter off.
im only 20 but i remember when i was a kid between 5-10 that 2 of my uncles had trucks like these...one was a 78 on 38's and one was a 73 on 42's. i think from then, it was imbedded into my mind that the only tough trucks were dentside fords with overwhelmingly large tires on them.
i bet youd never guess what my first vehicle i bought with my own money was.
edit...one had a 429cj swap and one had a 460 swap, and thats my next mission.
I love taking the '77 out in my area of town. Most of the people in my area (snobs) have new SUV's or trucks that are all done up with plastic/rims. I get looks all the time rolling around in this thing. Most people my age (23) have some sort of newer "plastic" truck. I enjoy parking it next to BMW's and Benz's at the grocery store!
I love my truck because of it's a head turner. My friends are jealous and one even wants one exactly like mine lol. I's dependable, easy to get under the hood to work on, all american steel(unlike new ones that are mostly plastic). And it's fun to make those punks in those ricers look in disbelief as I take right off the light at intersections!
my dads first truck was a 74 f100, he bought it when he was 15. one of my first trucks (after a 97 f150) was the 73 f100, bought it when i was 16. guess i runs in the family i plan on letting my kid drive the old beast.
I actually just bought my first Ford ever a 73 F-100 shortbed I bought it originally because of the price 1500 for 64000 original miles but after looking at this 35 year old truck and seeing how solid it still is I dont understand why I wasted my time on all the chevy's I had over the years with their sagging doors and weak metal.
ok. how about this, i bought a fire truck 1978 f-350 for the low mileage (4,700 origional)
dismantled all fire related parts including the utility bed, drove to seattle washington
from detroit mi (5000 miles round trip) for a bed i bought off ebay (super camper special bed). then sent it to the body shop. the truck now has 15,250 miles origional and enjoying every minute behind the steering wheel. she drives like a brand new truck, that is built in 1978. i have owned many new vehicles and nothing comes close to the
pleasure my dentside gives me. right down the radio delete...
Speaking of long lasting trucks, have you guys & gals seen that new Dodge commercial where the guy says he wants to pass his truck on to his kid? What a joke. Ha Ha!! 8 - 10years down the road that truck will be sitting in a scrap pile. (Probably for a couple years already) Your not going to see any of these new "trucks" on the road after 30 years. No way pal. Ya better go pick up an old Ford for a grand and pass that on to you kid.
