You can use a pickle fork, but that usually can stretch/mess up the ball joint requiring you to replace it, so a Big 4 lb sledge or so does the trick.
Don't have anything in the way when you hit it, but make sure you don't let the CV shaft drop all the way down(to it's maximum angle), b/c that will damage the CV shaft, and require it to be replace. A metal coat hanger can easily holt it up or zip ties.
Some times it takes a couple hard hits to break it loose. Don't worry you won't damage the knuckle.
I used a 16 oz ball peen hammer on mine. A couple of good whacks and done. Worked like that on both sides. Definitely make sure the knuckle is tied up or it will drop when it lets go.
