Hey everyone, My truck that I have now have a orginal E40D tranny with a 194,500 onit. The truck is a 1993 F-250 4x4, 7.3 IDI. I was thinking about swaping in a ZF standard transmission, Becasue I really don't like the E40D's, Also the E40D that is in it know feels like its on its way out, I not really sure if I want to spend the money for a rebuild on it, I rather have a standard tranny in there instead, So has anyone ever done this before. Whats involded other than swaping out the tranny and adding in the clutch parts, I like my truck and would like to keep it for a long while. Let me know.
You will need drive shafts. Had it done on my truck. If you use the single mass flywheel it will make a horendous racket kind of sounds like gravel in a cement truck. Brutal Offroad did my conversion and it was a class act.
You really need to think hard as to whether you want an "automatic" or "manual" truck.
I got both and even with all the crap I went thru to get my automatic to run properly, at the end of the day I find myself driving my automatic more that my standard these days. I do a lot of city driving and I get a sore left knee from all that clutching after a few hours.
Remember, you never know what you had until it is gone.

If your transmission is still in working order, there may not be much wrong with it internally and a rebuild with a few upgrades may not cost as much as swapping to a ZF5 speed (swaps like that will nickel and dime you all the way). The E4OD can be built as strong as any other transmission out there.
I swapped mine over to the 5spd last summer. The trans are different lengths (about 5",s) so both front and rear driveshafts are needed. Look for a donor truck if you decide. I went with the SMF and my trans doesn't sound as bad as most guys say about theirs. The only odd thing that I ran into was the vacuum switch on the pedal assy. I reworked the old one and no problem. The switch was part of the cruise control system. Hope this helps. I love my 92 F350 crewcab but was tired of problems with the E4OD, it has 335,000 on it and I plan to run it until either I drop or it does. I'm 68 so I think the truck will still be going after me.
