Once i massaged the headers a little the motor mounts did work. I did slot the holes in the fram towers about an eighth of an inch on each side to get them to drop in. Eventually i am going to move to a more custom setup with some tubing, but this will work for now.

If the motor mounts look strong and well engineered, even if they are obviously not factory, consider keeping as is! BTW,welcome to the Pieced together FE engine club,im a proud and somewhat confused member as well...............Bob

a quick question Ballzy regarding your photo on page 1. is it my imagination or are there two engine dipsticks on the drivers side of the block? i can see one just behind the power steering and what looks like another between the two center header tubes? on your photos on page two,i see the dipstick tube right next to the oil filter adapter, and on my my engine that little pad behind where your dipstick is,has the date code stamped in about 1/4" letters/numbers. my dipstick is behind the motor mount, ive got the rear sump oil pan. Is the forward mounted dipstick tube designed for the front sump pass. car oil pan,and do the rear mounted dipsticks go with rear sumps? Is there any rhyme or reason for these variations? Ive owned a lot of International Harvester vehicles, and i thought they had a lot of weird variations/options,etc,but im starting to question whether Ford gave IH a run for its money with FE engines.......

Exactly!

Your question made me go look at the blocks I have sitting around. One with a rear sump pan does not have the hole drilled for the front dip-tube. Apparently a block destined for 4x4 use could skip this step on the machine line.

It is pretty common to see a rear sump set-up that has the hole by the filter adapter pluged with a bolt or something.

Since you are just getting into the variables:
2 wheel drive trucks have front sumps like the cars.
FT engines have a 13 (?) quart pan with a bottom that is flat the whole length length of the pan.

yeah I had that same question about the dipsticks when I first got the truck. Since the motor is out of a car, the original pan was front sump, but when they put it in the truck they changed the pan to rear sump and that dipstick goes straight to the pan. I guess I could just plug the original dipstick hole, but I dunno....

And yes this is quite pieced together. Especially now that I have the alternator from a '98 Mustang on it....
