XLS trim option ?

I've heard of and seen XL and XLT trim option on trucks, but have never heard of or seen an XLS. I was looking thru a 1982 specifications book and seen it was noted as a trim option.

What did it entale. Is this a nicer option than a XLT lariat?

I never heard of it either. My 84 is an XL, one step down from the XLT and two steps down from the Lariat. The bottom trim was Custom that year. Never heard of XLS until recently on some Fords.

84 F150 short bed XL, T18, 3l55 diff, AC, PB, 232,000 miles, one owner

I have seen an XLS trim package but it was on a 92-96 truck dont think it was fancier than a XLT or Lariat

I've seen pictues of the 80's xls. The only differences I could see were a blacked out grille, and what looked like stainless inlays on the dash panels and horn trim in place of the woodgrain.

The 83 XLS model was the "before its time Goth Ford model". It included a two-color tape stripe (one color being black), argent color steel spoke wheels with black hubs, black front and rear bumpers, blackout treatment on the total grille area and headlight doors, black door handles, black windshield molding, and black 6 X 9 western swing away mirrors. Interior had a brushed aluminum (BA) applique on the dash where the XLT had wood. BA steering wheel trim, as well as carpeting, deluxe seat belts and buckles, cloth and vinyl seats. Only available on F100 and F150 Regular Cab Flaresides and Stylesides. They didn't sell well. Pickups were just emerging into the more comfortable varieties..sound systems, captains chairs, etc., but the XLS was just a tape-stripe facade (IMO), pickup owners weren't into fakey. Get ahold of a F Series pickup sales brochure..has pics and specs.

It's they're as in "they are". Not there as in "put it there".

You can achieve the same look with a can of satin black spray paint.

The Name Custom was dropped in 1982 and didn't reapear until 1987.

The Custom trim level was a have it your way model. You could special order it with every option avaliable, or without any options at all.

The bottom trim for 1982-1986 was a "no-name" baseline model, and was option restrictive. You had to go to the next trim level to get certain options, etc...

hope this helps.

I stand corrected on the "Custom" The bottom level in 84 must have been no name stripped truck.
