I didn't get anything from the '52 flattie, it just spun over. I got spark but wouldn't pop or spit, not until I hooked up the 12 volt battery and spun the heck out of it. It finally caught and fired up.
It Started!!!!!
After putting Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders & letting it soak for an hour & then putting some oil down the spark plug holes, as directed, it finally fired & then started right up & ran great. I think I spent less time & less aggravation putting a 350 crete moter into my '96 suburban last fall.
Thanks for all the great suggestions, Eric.
good news! now that it's running time to do a couple oil changes to keep the valves freed up. i usually substitute a quart of ATF for a quart of oil then one the 2nd change use marvel mystery oil.
Wow, I'm impressed, I was certain that it had something to do with the timing. Do you suppose that the stuck valves and rings are due to the fact that the old engines were designed to run on leaded gas and now that our only option is unleaded, it is causing havoc with the valves and rings?
I'm definitly going to a a nice oil change & i think the marvel mystery oil is a good idea. I dont think all the valves were hung up but maybe a few. I think the oil gave the engine a little more compression plus I noticed that the starter motor was able to spin the motor faster with everything lubede up better which im sure helped a lot.
I've been putting a bottle of led substitute in the tank when I fill up- don't know if it helps or not.
It was great to here it run again! I parked the truck in my back yard more then a year ago & when I built a big deck around my pool last year I couldnt start the truck to move it so being pressed for time as usual I put the deck in & ended it about a foot from the front of the truck. Its going to be tuff getting it out because theres a big bush behind it & a fence on one side- I'll have to do a 100 point turn- or run the bush over! No, the wife will kill me.
You might think about throwing a pint of Isoprolyl Alcohol in the tank with about 5 gallons of new gas. The alcohol will absorb any water that has condensed in the tank and allow it to burn. I't will run a little sloppy, but much less than if yo uget the water up in th e carb. Just a thought!
be careful using alcohol in gas, it will dry rubber hoses prematurely. lead additive will help when running regularly, but will disepate over time. using marvel(approx 1 oz per 10 gal) on regular basis, whether truck is used alot or not will lubricate ENTIRE system, fuel, carb, valve train, etc. and does NOT dry up!!!! todays gas has 12% water and very close percentage of ethanol or alcohol already in it . pete

one thing i have experienced with these old motors when they sit, the ignition ground gets dirty and what i mean is the distributer is usually grounded through the housing to the block and on more than one time i have had to clean up the mounting area of the distributer to get a engine to fire. why it happens is really unclear to me but you might put that on your checklist when your motor won't fire.
The alcohol additive was a one time deal to absorb excess water that may have condensed in the gas tank while sitting for an extended period - not meant to be a regular additive. And as such shouldn't cause any harm.
